The Merchant Marine Institute of Constantza is a public higher
education establishment under the authority of the Romanian Ministry of Education. It is
the only educational institution that specializes in training of marine officers in
Romania.
The Merchant Marine Institute structure includes:
- the Navigation & Marine Transport Faculty
- the Electromechanical Faculty
- the River Transport College
The Navigation & Marine Transport Faculty, extending over a five
year period, trains deck officers for the marine merchant fleet and engineers for marine
merchant management.
The Electromechanical Faculty, extending over a five year period,
trains mechanical and electric engineers for the marine merchant fleet.
The River Transport College trains deck and engine officers for the
inland ships.
The theoretical courses and practical training programs are well
balanced. For example, the five year study period of the two faculties consists of four
years of theoretical studies and one year of specialized training. This practical training
takes place at the end of the school years, as follows:
- at the end of the first year, at the lake nautical base;
- at the end of the third year, on board of our cargo-training ship
'NEPTUN";
- at the end of the fifth year, on board of the Romanian merchant
ships.
The teaching programs cover all the requirements imposed by the
IMO-STCW Convention for all the three above mentioned specializations, and even more than
that. After the graduation examination , our students are granted an engineering diploma
and a maritime officer certificate. In the beginning, the double training as engineers and
maritime officers was meant to offer two possibilities to the Institute's graduates. This
way, their employment was much more eased up.
In time, the orientation to a solid engineering formation, turned out
to be in agreement with the development of maritime industry and with the growing
responsibilities of the marine officers. Beginning with 1994, in our Institute there have
been organized postgraduate studies for specialists in the fields of navigation and
electromechanics.
