財団法人アジア太平洋観光交流センター（APTEC）は、1995年9月に関西国際空港の対岸、大阪府泉佐野市のりんくうタウンに設立され、以来アジア太平洋諸国からの我が国に対する国際貢献への期待に応えて、世界観光機関（UNWTO）アジア太平洋センターの活動支援を行なうとともに、アジア太平洋諸国との観光交流促進に関するさまざまな事業を行なっております。そのひとつが、21世紀の産業である観光産業のマーケティング戦略に不可欠な世界の観光関係統計の収集・分析とその情報提供であります。

　私共の財団が支援する世界観光機関（UNWTO）は、観光分野における国連の専門機関であり、観光の振興と発展をその目的としていますが、特に統計やマーケティングの分野においては、加盟各国から集積されるさまざまなデータを基に信頼すべき基本統計を編纂しているほか、観光における将来展望についても幅広い予測を行ない、世界各国の高い評価を受けているところであります。

　当財団としましても、これらUNWTOの貴重な統計資料を幅広く皆様のお役に立てる方法はないかと検討してまいりましたが、幸いなことに昨年度に引き続きUNWTO本部のご了解を得て、ここに「世界観光統計資料集」として本書を刊行することができるようになりました。

　本書の統計は、世界の主要観光送客国・地域のアウトバウンド旅行者を目的地別に年を追ってまとめたもので、類例のない大変貴重なものであります。長い経験を有するUNWTOのノウハウがあればこそ可能になったものです。当財団の記念すべき事業として本書を刊行できるのは大変なよろこびであります。広く観光行政に携わる方々、観光業界の方々、観光に関心のある研究者の方々、そして一般の方々に、地球的規模のツーリズムの実態を明らかにする基礎的資料として活用していただくことを心より希望いたします。

 The Asia-Pacific Tourism Exchange Center (APTEC) is a new foundation that was established in September 1995. Its purpose is to support the activities of the World Tourism Organization's (UNWTO) Regional Support Office for Asia and the Pacific and organize a variety of activities related to tourism exchange with countries in the Asia-Pacific region. APTEC is also a response to growing demands for increased contributions from Japan to the international community. One of APTEC's main activities is compiling, analyzing and supplying world tourism-related statistics that are of vital interest to marketing strategies in the tourism industry of the 21st century.

 APTEC provides support for UNWTO, a specialized agency of the United Nations aimed at tourism promotion. To help promote the development of tourism, UNWTO compiles basic statistics based on a wealth of data gathered from its member countries and conducts wide-ranging forecasts on the future of world tourism. UNWTO has a high reputation for its reliability and usefulness of its data for statistical and marketing activities.

 From the beginning, APTEC studied the possibility of making these UNWTO statistics widely available to those interested in tourism. Fortunately we have obtained UNWTO's approval to publish this data in the form of "WORLD TOURISM STATISTICS."

 The statistics contained in this publication are unprecedented and we believe that they are extremely valuable. The data features outbound tourist trends organized by major generating countries/regions, destinations and periods. This achievement is made possible by UNWTO and its many years of experience and knowhow. It is an honor and the greatest pleasure for all of us at APTEC to be able to publish this data as a memorable project of our organization. We sincerely hope that those in tourism promotion, tourism industry, researchers, and the general public will make full use of this publication as a basic data resource guide of world tourism trends.

　過去数十年間、観光は世界でも最も重要な産業のひとつとして発展を遂げてきました。雇用創出面では観光は最大の産業であり、またその提供するサービス内容は旅行、宿泊、食事はもとより、文化や伝統（特に伝統工芸）の維持、さらには生態系の保存まで、極めて広範囲に及んでいます。世界的な生活水準の向上によって海外旅行が身近なものとなり、また科学技術の発展によって旅がますます容易に楽しめるものとなるにつれ、外国を訪れて異文化に触れようという人々の数は著しい増加をみせています。

　「ツーリズム・サテライト・アカウント：その概念的枠組み」と「2020年へ向けた観光予測（ツーリズム：2020ビジョン）」の中で世界観光機関（UNWTO）は、観光産業のもつ経済面での影響度を調査、分析、予測しています。これは同産業の規模、重要度、純寄与度などについて信頼するに足る経済データを提供したもので、各国の政府や観光業界が21世紀において観光産業のさらなる発展を図る上での貴重な判断材料となっています。UNWTOの目的は、まず、各国の政府・民間観光業界の連携を強化すべく、UNWTO加盟国の観光振興機関の技量向上を支援することにあります。また各国レベルおよび広域レベルでの観光が経済、社会、文化、環境とどのような係わりをもち、どのような影響を与えているかについての知識の向上にも努めています。

　この意味で、UNWTOの労作ともいえる貴重な統計データをベースにアジア太平洋観光交流センター（APTEC）が刊行したこの「世界観光統計資料集」は、主要観光送客国・地域に関する観光統計の重要な情報源となっています。本資料集に盛り込まれた情報は、2001-2005年の期間中、当該国・地域の経済に対して観光産業がどのような影響を及ぼしてきたかを推測する上で特に役立つ関連指標を提供しています。本資料が必ずや、日本およびアジア太平洋地域において観光に携わる官民諸団体のお役に立つものと確信しております。

 Tourism, over the past decades, has become one of the most important industries of the world. It generates the most employment and its services range from travel, accommodation, catering and maintenance of culture and tradition through the handicraft industry especially, to the preservation of ecosystems. The improvement of the standard of living the world over, as well as the scientific and technical advancements facilitating travel, have contributed to a marked increase in the opportunities people have to visit and experience cultures other than their very own.

 In its Tourism Satellite Account (TSA): the conceptual framework and Tourism: 2020 Vision, the World Tourism Organization has taken it upon itself to study, analyze and forecast the economic impacts of tourism in order to develop a credible economic statement of the size, significance and net contribution of tourism activity to guide governments in their policy-making endeavors and the private sector in the further development and improvement of their tourism enterprises in this Millennium. The goal of UNWTO is to assist Member countries in upgrading the skills of their tourism institutions with regard to strengthening partnership between governments and private sector tourism operators, and in promoting the knowledge of the economic, social, cultural, and environmental links and impacts of tourism at both national and regional levels.

 This publication Outbound Statistics by Destination produced by the Asia-Pacific Tourism Exchange Center (APTEC) has received UNWTO's invaluable contribution through the provision of important tourism statistics of the main generating markets. The tourism information incorporated presents very relevant physical indicators for estimating the economic impacts of tourism in a country of reference or in a given region during the period 2001-2005. I am confident that this publication will meet the needs of both the public and private sector tourism-related organizations in Japan as well as in neighboring countries in the East Asia and Pacific region.
