The first thing we associate with LEARNING is...
TEACHING. When parents or teachers wanted us to learn something, they "taught" us.
BUT really, the effectiveness of any lesson should be judged by its stickiness.
Have those lessons stuck with us? Do we remember those lessons at all?
Who taught you the most memorable lessons of your life?
Experience
I hear and I forget
I see and I remember
I do and I understand
SLE
Structured Learning Experience
* developed and popularized by Pfeiffer & Jones
How do adults learn?
Some principles and conditions:
Adult learners learn best as a result of experience.
Adult learners bring along a wealth of experiences, knowledge, and skills. Thus, they are the richest resource in the learning process.
Adult learners are motivated, not taught. They learn what they want to learn, and they have their learning preferences.
Adult learners learn best in a non-threatening climate: one with respect, acceptance, and trust.
The Adult Learning Cycle
The Experiential Learning Cycle
Steps of the SLE
Step 1: Orientation
Setting the mood. linking current activity with previous activity, or to the total program.
Step 2: Instructions
Instructions should be clearly heard, understood, and carried out by participants.
Step 3: Experiencing
Activity suitable for learning objectives (ex. case study, role playing, drawing, etc.)
Step 4: Data gathering & analysis
Use process questions to facilitate the processing of the experience. Reconstructing patterns & interactions. Publish.
Step 5: Synthesis, Generalizing
Putting everything together. Finding relevance in the activity. Augmenting with theory.
Step 6: Integrating
Applying learning to actual situations. Planning for more effective behavior.
Learning becomes the enjoyable and rewarding experience that it's supposed to be.
