5. Universal mass drug administration (MDA) of Schistosomiasis in endemic villages in Kratie and Stung Treng Provinces from February to April 2006

Although prevalence monitoring of S. mekongi by stool examination with Kato-katz technique showed 0% this year, we still need to conduct MDA of praziquantel in Kratie and Stung Treng provinces. Our MDA focuses only on school children due to a couple of reasons: it is recommended at international meetings, requested by communities and provincial health department, and supported by the result of serology test, Praziquantel tablets are given, according to weight, age and sex of each person. Mebendazole tablets are given, 500 mg for each person. Drugs were administered under direct observation of health staff during MDA campaign to everyone in endemic villages in Kratie province except pregnant women, children under 2 years old, breast-feeding women with an infant less than 2 months old. MDA campaign took place for three months from 5 February to 5 April. We worked in two teams in strong collaboration with all the provincial level staffs.

We treated 46,062 (total population of 55,610) the coverage of 82.8% in Kratie province, and 5,260 persons in Stung Treng province. For Rattanakiri and Kg. Cham provinces, we treated only school children, who had the serological test positive in February 2005.

B. Soil-Transmitted Helmintheasis Control

1. Mass Drug Administration (MDA) to primary school children in 24 provinces

Reports of MDA were collected from 24 provinces through malaria and helminth control supervisors at the Provincial Health Department (PHD). The reports were approved by each Provincial Education Department (PED). According to these reports, in round II (June-November) 2005, the number of 6,072 primary schools conducted regular deworming programme and covered 2,517,672 (95.5%) children out of 2,636,722 in 24 provinces.
