BEMAC Creates the Future
Uzushio Electric Co., Ltd. on April 1, 2002 announced that "BEMAC" will be the corporate brand collectively representing the technology, products and services of the Uzushio Group. BEMAC stands for BEam, Metrical, Alternative and Creation.
Since its inauguration in 1946, Uzushio has been engaged in the designing, manufacturing and installation of marine-use switchboards. The company enjoys a solid reputation as a supplier that never falls to respond to clients' requirements by remaining committed to technological innovations that meet the needs of the times. Today, there is rising demand for ships which consume a great deal of wattages on board, such as containerships carrying many reefer containers, specialized carriers equipped with high power consuming cargo-handling gear, and vessels running on electrical propulsion systems. In view of this trend, Uzushio has been developing high-voltage main switchboards for marine use for two years and a half. In February 2002, with an eye toward meeting the requirements of particularly safety-minded clients, the company successfully conducted in-board arc tests with a trial switchboard in accordance with the IEC 60298-AA standards, obtaining the first appraisal from Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (Class NK).
In addition to main switchboards and motor starter panels, Uzushio supplies a broad range of marine-use electrical infrastructure items, including engine monitoring/control boards and monitor/data logger systems, and is thereby keeping abreast of the continuing sophistication of maritime infrastructure accompanying the increasing size, diversification and functionality of ships. Capitalizing on its technological resources and experience, the company has also diversified into new areas by proposing switchboard systems for on-shore industrial plants, developing businesses to create opportunities for senior citizens, and proposing corporate information systems.
Ahead of announcing the establishment of BEMAC, the company undertook to reposition its business activities and reconfirm their starting points. Through this soul searching process, Uzushio identified itself as a Beam Metrical Industry, and redefined its mission on that basis. The company looks to BEMAC not only as a means for having its identity better understood by clients and shared among its own staff, but also as a way to express its commitment to being a company dedicated to living up to the trust of clients by remaining creatively ahead of the times.
Uzushio expects BEMAC to be well materialized by its future achievements.
These tests proved that Uzushio's products were up to the IEC 60298-AA standards.

Yanmar Develops New 5EY26/6EY26 Series of Medium-Speed Engines
Yanmar Co., Ltd. has developed a new generation of diesel engines, the EY26 series, in an effort to make real the concept of "diesel engines continuing to evolve in the 2lst century in harmony with the global environment." The new products embody the manufacturer's commitment to meet clients' needs and to help preserve the global environment at the same time.
The diesel engines of the EY26 series are intended to achieve the following aims:
1. "Unparalleled high efficiency (low fuel consumption) and high performance" compatible with "Harmonization with the environment"
The key to achieve both these aims is "low fuel consumption compatible with low NOx."
To meet this challenge, Yanmar adopted its unique ASSIGN combustion system for the "EY26" series. At the same time, the manufacturer used a model to carry out a full simulation of the complete air intake/exhaust system, the aim being to increase the intake/exhaust work; this pursuit of optimization was accompanied by an attempt to develop a turbo-charging system which could simultaneously achieve low fuel consumption and loading ease.
Mechanical loss reduction was also successfully pursued, resulting in unparalleled high efficiency (Iow fuel consumption) and high performance.
2. "Ensured trouble-free reliability and durability"
Verification is done with enhanced accuracy by fusing the basic technology Yanmar has perfected with new analytical technology using 3D models; all theoretical improvements are then thoroughly confirmed by testing with real engines.
3. "Facilitated engine outfitting and maintenance"
Facilitation of engine outfitting and maintenance has been sought for the EY26 series by means of incorporating the following factors into the engine design:
(1) The lubricating oil cooler is modularized with its bypass pipe and temperature control valve built into the case.
(2) The intercooler case, also functioning as the turbocharger base and the air passage, is also modularized.
(3) Modularization and functional integration have resulted in 40% fewer components than in any conventional engine of a comparable class.
(4) An inserted-type intercooler contributes to cleaning ease.
(5) The three-piece type connecting rod ensures rigidity and enables easier maintenance.
(6) Piping connections are concentrated on the front side to facilitate piping work on board.
(7) A simple piping layout contributes to maintenance ease.
(8) Piping points are reduced by the use of the mixing type fresh water cooling system.
Yanmar is confident that the making these development themes a reality has resulted in providing the "EY26" series with the capacity to fully live up to clients' expectations as diesel engines of the 2lst century, friendly to the global environment.
