SYLFF Program:
Fellowships are offered to outstanding graduate students in the fields of economics, business, international law, and other related fields, with particular emphasis placed on international relations. Important extracurricular activity supported by the fund is study trips to other countries. These study trips are designed to relate practical experience to theory.
Selection Process:
SYLFF fellowships are announced once a year, through posters, releases to the USP newsletter and USP radio and TV, and through faculty members in the eligible departments. Applicants are required to submit a project proposal and plan of work approved by an academic advisor, official transcript and two letters of recommendation. Interviews and consultations with academic advisors are conducted as necessary. One hundred and eleven (111) fellowships have been awarded to date. Seventy-four (74) fellows have already received their degrees, thirty (30) are in the final stages of their graduate work, and seven (7) have recently been selected.

SYLFF Program:
Support is provided to graduate students participating in a multidisciplinary program in the social sciences with an emphasis on the theory and practice of development in third world countries and small island states, not only in the Pacific but worldwide.
Selection Process:
SYLFF fellowships are announced in the main newspapers in member countries, as well as in Australia and New Zealand. In allocating fellowships, attention is given to applicants' academic records, ethnicity and country of origin. Gender, disciplinary background, and likely future contribution to 'development' are also taken into consideration. In addition to screening written applications, references are sought from academic and character referees. Interviews are conducted where possible. Fellowships are generally for two years; awardees are required to complete a graduate course in their second year. There are four levels of fellowship assistance. The average annual fellowship is US$7,200. To date, forty (40) students have been awarded SYLFF fellowships.
