About this publication
Generally known as "SYLFF", The Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund was established in 1987 by The Nippon Foundation. As of March 2002, 65 institutions in 43 countries have received endowments which allow these universities to award fellowships to graduate students in social sciences and humanities disciplines. The roster of fellowship recipients includes the names of more than 8,500 individuals. Related follow-up programs and activity have offered further opportunities for graduate students enrolled in SYLFF institutions, and for direct involvement by currently enrolled and graduated SYLFF fellowship recipients.
Overseen by the Sasakawa Peace Foundation until June 30, 1997, SYLFF is now administered by the Scholarship Division of The Tokyo Foundation. This SYLFF Institutional Directory has been compiled to provide information on all of the institutions which have received SYLFF endowments over the past 15 years, to contribute to the sharing of information, and to support the further networking of these institutions.*
The information contained in this publication has been derived from responses to a questionnaire by SYLFF endowed institutions between September and November 2002. We take this opportunity to thank all of the administrators and faculty who responded for their kind cooperation. A full version of this Directory will soon be available on our Website.
*Note: A few endowments were awarded to a single school within a university in which case the profile includes information on the university as whole and the specific school. Some endowments were awarded to a system comprised of several universities within the system in which case the profile includes a description of the system and the universities.
