1. Corporate Overview

Consilium Selesmar Srl was established in 1995, after being acquired by the Consilium Group of Sweden, whose main business areas comprise marine systems, security systems and components. Consilium Selesmar Srl is an independent division incorporated within the organisational structure of Consilium Group, and is proud of its ability to supply radar, ECDIS and integrated navigation systems.
Based in Florence, Italy since 1981, which is when its forerunner company Selesmar was established, Consilium Selesmar has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of navigation equipment.

2. History

Although the history of Consilium Selesmar Srl itself is relatively short, the company's heritage does, in fact, date back to 1960. Since its acquisition by Consilium Group in 1995, Consilium Selesmar has been renowned for producing the complete navigation package. The list of dates below show some of the most important milestones in the history of Consilium Selesmar Srl.
Chronology

1960: Selenia, the original forerunner company of Consilium Selesmar, was established in Naples, Italy as a manufacturer of radar.

Selenia entered into a cooperation agreement with Raytheon Anschutz to supply radar. This relationship lasted 18 years.

1978: Selenia and Raytheon Anschutz split.

1980: Selenia disbanded.

1981: Selesmar was established at the same premises previously used by Selenia in Florence. Selesmar benefited from the heritage of Selenia.

1984: The 'Selesgun' raster scan high-resolution display system was developed.

1988: In collaboration with the Finnish company Aspo, Selesmar developed the first integrated navigation system in the world at the time.

1995: Consilium Group bought Selesmar, creating a new company called Consilium Selesmar Srl. Thereafter, Consilium Selesmar became an independent division incorporated within the organisational structure of Consilium Group.

3. Organisation

Since 1995, Consilium Selesmar Srl has been an independent entity within the navigation division of the marine systems business area, which itself constitutes one of the three business areas of Consilium Group. The other two business areas are security systems and components.

5. Products

As an independent entity operating alongside Consilium Navigation AB within the navigation division of the marine systems business area, Consilium Selesmar Srl develops and markets both integrated navigation systems and individual navigation products. Since 1960, Selesmar has delivered more than 4,000 radar systems. The company has also equipped more than 2,500 vessels with its radar and navigation systems.

The main product groups of Consilium Selesmar are as follows:

(1) Radar

(i) ARPA Navigation Radar - Selesmar MM950/A
(ii) ARPA and ATA Navigation Radar - Selesmar NavBat series

The MasterMate(MM)and NavBat radar series are Selesmar's fourth generation radar. Both advanced gate array and MOSFET15 technologies are utilised. Full-type approval in compliance with the EC Directive16 on marine equipment has also been earned. Their products are, therefore, entitled to bear the Steering Wheel mark. Consilium Selesmar believes that their ARPA radar are electronically very up-to-date and technically the most developed in the world. These radar are also their best-selling products.

(2) Integrated Bridge Systems and ECDIS

(i) Selesmar INS 970

INS 970 operates in accordance with One Man Bridge Operations(OMBA). Its centrepiece is its user-friendly conning station, at which the ship's control information generated by single devices is united on a graphic display. Consilium Selesmar can manufacture 60% of this system in-house, with the other 40% coming from either Consilium Navigation AB or other companies such as C Plath, which is now under Litton Marine Systems.

(ii) ECDIS

There are two kinds of ECDIS: ECS 965 and ECS 980. The former is the stand-alone version, which can display the real-tie position and the course/speed vector of both the ship and all ARPA radar targets, whereas the latter is the fully integrated version, which provides essential input to the INS 970 for automatic navigation and track-keeping(ANTS).

(3) Vessel Traffic Service Systems

Selesmar VTS 997

Selesmar has delivered over 50 VTS systems to different locations worldwide since 1984. Each system can have its own design and performance criteria. Consilium Selesmar regards the Remote Data Links as being a critical part of the VTS system for the communication of sensor data between distantly located sites and the operations centre. This is achieved by compressing sensor data into narrow bandwidths for efficient transmission.

9. Technical Cooperation and Research & Development

Consilium Selesmar collaborates with a number of companies, particularly regarding the procurement of gyrocompasses, autopilots, echosounders and GPS systems. The company has had a long relationship with C Plath(now under Litton Marine Systems)from which it has procured gyrocompasses, and it also has a cooperation agreement with Skanti for the GMDSS system. These cooperation agreements are especially necessary for Consilium Selesmar to manufacture its complete integrated navigations and communications packages.

As for research and development, Consilium Selesmar is currently developing a new type of radar with a TFT17 monitor. The company expects that the two-year-old technology being used now in the manufacturing of their radar will be phased out in due course, with this new technology taking its place.
