1. Corporate Overview
 
STN ATLAS Marine Electronics was established in April 1998, but is actually a company with a long history. It was previously a subsidiary of STN Atlas Elektronik. Its history of almost 100 years has been determined by well-known product names such as AEG, ATLAS and DEBEG.
 
Operating as STN ATLAS Marine Electronics, a Member of the EuroMarine Group with headquarters in Hamburg, it is today a nationally and internationally renowned systems company. Its products and services include equipment and systems for communication, navigation, hydrographic survey, automation, electrical power and drive technology.
 
2. History
 
Although STN ATLAS Marine Electronics itself was only recently established in April 1998, it is, in fact, a company with a history dating back to 1903. (Please refer to Fig. 1. below.)

3. Organisation
 
3.1 Overall Group Structure
 
Since the beginning of 1999, STN ATLAS Marine Electronics has been part of the EuroMarine Electronics group. EuroMarine is one of the largest non-naval marine electronics companies in Europe, consisting of 30 individual companies with 2,500 employees. At the time of formation in 1999, it had an expected annual turnover of around DM 800 million8(45.6 billion yen).

3.2 STN ATLAS Marine Electronics
 
STN ATLAS Marine Electronics(SAM Electronics)has a workforce of around 1500, one third of whom are employed outside Germany. SAM Electronics is based in Hamburg, and has five subsidiaries in Germany and ten subsidiaries overseas.

4. Company Performance
 
As part of STN ATLAS Elektronik in 1998, the total sales revenue of STN ATLAS Marine Electronics was 221.3 million euro9 (25 billion yen)and the order intake was 247.4 million euro(28 billion yen).
 
No financial information was obtained for 1999.
 
In 2000, the total sales revenue of SAM Electronics GmbH was 177.2 million euro(20 billion yen)and the order intake was 155.8 million euro(18 billion yen).

Service for customers, round-the-clock and worldwide is organized by the Customer-Support-Centre in Hamburg, staffed with specialists for various product lines. They help with remote diagnostics and advice or organize the deployment of service technicians for repair on board in cases where close cooperation with their international network of subsidiaries and service partners is required.
 
An intelligent logistics system ensures that any spare parts required, even for older systems and equipment, are in stock. Spare part depots at strategic locations along the major trade routes of international shipping assure short lead times.
 
Besides maintenance and repair SAM Electronics also specializes in retrofit and conversion works in connection with ship extensions and modernisations. As part of product support activities SAM Electronics is a certified surveyor for communication and navigation installations on behalf of major classification societies, such as GL, ABS, BV, DNV, LR, NK, etc.

9. Technical Cooperation and R&D
 
In June 2001 SAM Electronics formed an alliance with Lyngso Marine of Denmark. The alliance was named 'PartnerShip', and the two companies are to jointly develop and market a complete range of ship automation products and systems based on their combined experience of outfitting more than 8,000 commercial and naval vessels. SAM Electronics engages in wide cross-fertilization of information with the other participants within its organisational structure.
