RELATED EXPERIENCE
The Cincinnati Gear Company has manufactured a wide variety of custom designed gears since 1907. Cincinnati Gear has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of gearing for marine propulsion, generator sets, dredge drives, manufacturing equipment, and rail transportation. A sampling of the programs we have been involved with are listed below:
・ The TAO 187 Fleet Oiler-This is a main propulsion reduction gear unit driven by a 16,000 HP medium speed diesel. The gearbox for this program has the largest surface hardened and ground gear designed and manufactured in the United States for the USN. A full load, back to back test was performed on every gearbox. Cincinnati Gear designed and produced seven (7) shipsets of reduction gears for this program, which have proven to be extremely reliable. Prime Contractor: Avondale Shipyards
・ The AOE-6 Combat Support Ship-This program involves the design, manufacture, and testing of the main reduction lock-train gear units. Each AOE-6 class ship requires (2) gear units, each driven by (2) LM2500 gas turbines. This is the first U.S. Navy gearbox that uses the Franco-Tosi reversing coupling to provide maneuvering/reversing capabilities without a controllable pitch propeller. Prime Contractor: NASSCO
・ The LCAC Hovercraft Program-This program involves the complete responsibility for the transmission system, which consists of eight reduction gear units and all shafts, couplings, and clutches. The system is powered by (4) Textron Lycoming TF-40 gas turbines. A full load test is performed on every gearbox. Prime Contractor: Textron Marine and Land Systems/Avondale Gulfport Marine.
・ DDG-51 Genset Program-Cincinnati Gear was awarded a prototype design and development contract for the U.S. Navy DDG-51 Destroyer Genset Reduction Gear. The design configuration is a single stage, vertically offset parallel shaft gear unit driving a generator at 1,800 RPM. The prime mover is an Allison 501 Gas Turbine. After successfully passing the qualification test requirements, Cincinnati Gear was awarded a production contract for additional units. Prime Contractor: Allison Engine Company
・ The MA-107 Marine Reduction Gear Program-This gearbox was developed to provide gas turbine propulsion power for high speed ferry, and patrol boat applications. The modular design of this gearbox permits its use in a variety of configurations and with several gas turbines.
・ The Jetfoil Program-The gearbox used for this high speed ferry program has proved extremely reliable in conjunction with the Allison 501 Gas Turbine. Over the past 20 years over 110 gearboxes have been produced, compiling over 600,000 hours of trouble free operation. Prime Contractor: Kawasaki Heavy Industries, LTD.
・ The MK-17 and MK-19 Torpedo Ejection Systems-These programs utilize sophisticated, light weight, and highly reliable planetary gearing which is powered by air turbines. Prime Contractor: Allied Signal
・ The 501 Genset Program-The gearboxes used for this program are designed to provide reliable speed reduction with an Allison 501 Gas Turbine as the power source.
This list is just a small portion of the programs Cincinnati Gear has been involved in. However, it is indicative of the depth and variety of experience that Cincinnati Gear has in the design, manufacture, and testing of high quality gear transmission systems. Cincinnati Gear's experienced Engineering and Manufacturing personnel are the reason these programs have been so successful.
The Cincinnati Gear Company is well known throughout the industry for "Engineering Excellence". Our contribution to the development of gear standards is a continuing effort. We actively support the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME) in the advancement of power transmission and gear rating technology. This is reflected in our involvement on several gear rating committees. In addition, Cincinnati Gear has over 85 years of experience in the manufacture of precision gearing. This experience enables us to provide a quality product at a reasonable price.
