In the following pages is presented in brief the national maritime structure and functions of national authorities and the main sea borne trade activities of the country.
Despite that maritime industry is not the strongest industry in Colombia, because the lack of a maritime tradition and national interest, shipping and port activities are in a continuos process of development.
Nowadays, port management activities, agency and services for international and national shipping are stronger than shipping management, thanks to the privatization of the port sector. In the other hand shipping have become a very weak industry, due to the high competition with foreign shipping lines and the lack of support from the government for the development of a modern and strong national fleet, therefore the national fleet is almost disappeared.
Other activities like shipbuilding, scraping, repair, modification and maintenance of ships is only presented for cabbotge and light tonnage.
This brief paper intends to present the simple and small structure of the Colombian maritime sector.
