なまはげ太鼓は、男鹿半島を中心に秋田県北東部に古くから伝わる「なまはげの奇習行事」の「なまはげ伝説」の一説から創作されたものです。「なまはげ」とは、姿は「鬼」そのものですが、真意は「山神の化身」であり、年に一度下山し、人間界の「なまけ者」や「悪いことをしている者」を戒めるためにやってきて、暴れまわります。この様子を表現しているのが前半で、「真山おろし」という曲です。また、後半は、自分達の悪い心を戒めてくれた山神様に、改心した人々が深く感謝し、「これからは一生懸命がんばりますので、山の上から見守っていて下さい。」という願いを込めた「真山がえし」という曲があります。

　「なまはげ太鼓伝承会」は、ふるさとを大切にした、新しい伝統芸能として生まれました。広く皆さんに知っていただけるよう「男鹿半島」だけでなく、県内はもとより日本全国、さらには海外での公演も多数行っております。

　The name, Namahage, is closely related with the folklore handed down through generations among the people of Oga Peninsula situated northwest of Akita Prefecture. According to the legend, the Shinto deity of mountain, disguised as demonic creatures, comes down and rampages through the village once a year to rectify bad and lazy behaviors of the villagers. The first half of the performance signifies the angry demonic creatures looking for bad and lazy villagers. The latter half expresses the villagers' repentance and promises to strive for the righteous living. The demonic creatures go back to the mountain leaving peace among the villagers. The awesome and powerful performance will sure to give strong invigorating energy to the audience.
