秩父夜祭りは、埼玉県秩父郡の総鎮守秩父神社が12月3日に行う例大祭のことです。五穀豊穣を感謝して行われる祭りで、国の重要有形民俗文化財に指定されている豪華絢爛たる笠鉾と屋台6基が曳きに出されます。この山車に乗って叩かれる太鼓が秩父屋台囃子です。屋台囃子は、約300年前の寛文年間(1660年代)に山車屋台が作られた時から伝えられているもので、囃子を含む屋台行事等が重要無形文化財に指定されています。この囃子は、江戸囃子や祇園囃子の持つ粋や雅とは異なり、あくまでも力と技で打ち出す豪快なリズムに特長があり、重さ10トンあまりの屋台を曳く曳き子の士気を高めるために演奏されるものです。

　

　In Chichibu, the western region of Saitama Prefecture, Chichibu-yomatsuri(Chichibu Night Festival)is being held on 3rd of December. This is an annual festival expressing farmers' gratitude for good harvest of the year. At this festival originated about 300 years ago, six yatai, huge decorated floats weighing over 10 tons each representing six districts of town, are drown through the streets at night from different directions to gather at the famous Chichibu Shrine. Hayashi, Taiko festive music, is played throughout the procession in the belly of each float to encourage the people to pull the float. Many Taiko players take turn to play and it is, in fact, considered to be the locomotive power of the floats. The rhythm is very unique to this festival and regarded as one of the major traditional Taiko rhythms in Japan.
