今から約七百余年のむかし、能登地方(石川県)に大干ばつが続きました。人々は、日夜雨乞い太鼓で慈雨を祈ったところ天地神々に通じ、恵みの大雨で大地を潤し、豊年万作の年になったそうです。以来、その雨乞い太鼓が現在に伝わる豊年太鼓の始まりです。

　勇壮な桴さばき、流暢な立居ふるまいは日本のみならず世界でも評価されました。昭和33年10月には、天皇皇后両陛下の御前にて天覧に供し、その栄を博しました。日本国内はもとより、海外でも幾度か公演しました。また、映画、テレビにも数多く出演しています。

　日本海の怒涛の如く、静から激動へ地底から轟く如き迫力は、その昔、真心から願いと訴えを表現した当時の人々の祈りの芸術とも言えましょう。今日では、街づくりの大祭・落成の催事・開店・祝事にと、おめでたい事々に懇請を受けて出演しています。

　

　“Nanao”is a city in Ishikawa Prefecture located at the center of rugged Noto Peninsula jetting out to the Sea of Japan.

　Nanao Honen Taiko dates back 700 years when the then village had a successive severe drought. Villagers built a 60-meter-high tower and beat Taiko for days without stopping to pray for the rain. Their prayers were answered and resulted in gracious rain which in turn brought abundant harvest to the region. Since then, villagers have named this Taiko as Honen Taiko(“Honen” means the year of a good harvest)and it is now continued as the tradition.

　Nanao Honen Taiko has since then attained the level of being an art, still retaining the spirit of sincere fervent prayers of the bygone people and today, it is designated as an Intangible Cultural Asset of the Nanao City. The team has been invited to perform at various festivals and celebrations throughout Japan and abroad. It has also made appearances in numerous TV programs and films.
