The Toho Gakuen Orchestra consists of students from Japan's celebrated Toho Gakuen School of Music, which encompasses the coeducational music course at the Toho Gakuen Girls High School and the Toho Gakuen College of Music. The orchestra is drawn from all levels of the School, including undergraduates, high school students, research course students and diploma course students. Distinguished conductors and artists both from within and outside of the School teach and prepare the students. Each concert is preceded by a series of intensive rehearsals.

　Orchestral education was established at the Toho Gakuen School of Music by the late Prof. Hideo Saito from the earliest days of the“music school for children.”Since then, education in the symphonic repertoire has become a focus of the Toho educational system. Its students receive orchestral training of the highest quality together with instruction in their individual areas of study. The excellence of the Toho Gakuen Orchestra and the training of musicians at the Toho Gakuen School have been recognized nationally and internationally. Many former students play active roles today as conductors, concertmasters and principal players of professional symphony orchestras.

　The Toho Gakuen Orchestra has, in addition to its appearances in Tokyo, had many concert tours throughout Japan as well as overseas. Among its most notable achievements have been tours of the United States(1964)and Europe(1970), a centennial season concert at Carnegie Hall(March 1991), an appearance at the Evian Music Festival in France(May 1991)and a three-week concert tour across France in association with Jeunesse Musical France(October 1991). More recently, the orchestra won special praise from pianist Martha Argerich and conductor Myung-Whun Chung when they joined forces for brilliant performances at the Beppu Argerich Music Festival in 1998 and 1999.

　Guest conductors frequently work with the orchestra in both rehearsal and performance settings. The list of these conductors includes Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Taijiro Iimori, Hideomi Kuroiwa, Michiyoshi Inoue, Tadaaki Otaka, Masahiko Enkoji, Ken Takaseki, Naoto Ootomo, Yukio Kitahara, Naohiro Totsuka, Kazufumi Yamashita, Toshiaki Umeda, Norichika Iimori, Tatsunori Numajiri, Jean Fournet, Valery Gergiev, Emmanuel Krivine, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Szymon Goldberg, Daniel Barenboim, Michael Tilson Thomas, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leon Fleisher, Gunter Pichler and Alan Gilbert.

　桐朋学園オーケストラは、わが国の代表的な音楽学校である桐朋学園音楽部門(桐朋学園大学、桐朋女子高等学校音楽科《男女共学》)の学生・生徒からなるオーケストラである。桐朋学園音楽部門での合奏教育は、故斉藤秀雄教授によって「子供のための音楽教室」創設当初から始められ、以来桐朋の音楽教育の中心に据えられてきており、本学の学生・生徒は各自の実技と併せて、高度な合奏教育を受けている。オーケストラは大学生、高校生、研究生、ディプロマコース生から学年を問わず編成されており、学園内外の著名な指揮者、演奏家に指導を受け、リハーサルを重ねた後必ず演奏会を行っている。桐朋学園オーケストラは東京での演奏会の他に、国内・海外への演奏旅行も多く、これまでに1964年アメリカ、1970年ヨーロッパの演奏旅行、1991年の3月にカーネギー・ホールの創立100周年記念の演奏会、5月にフランス・エヴィアン音楽祭、10月にはジュネス・ミュージカル・フランスの招聘で3週間に渡ってフランス各地で演奏会を行った。

　桐朋学園オーケストラ、桐朋の合奏教育は国内外で高い評価を得ており、その卒業生は日本国内はもちろんのこと世界各国で、指揮者としてまたコンサート・マスター、首席奏者をはじめとしたオーケストラプレイヤーとして多くの卒業生が活躍している。今日までに小澤征爾、秋山和慶、飯守泰次郎、黒岩英臣、井上道義、尾高忠明、円光寺雅彦、高関健、大友直人、北原幸男、十束尚宏、山下一史、梅田俊明、飯森範親、沼尻竜典、J.フルネ、V.ゲルギエフ、E.クリビヌ、G.シノポリ、S.ゴールドベルク、D.バレンボイム、M.ティルソン・トーマス、M.ロストロポーヴィチ、L.フライシャー、G.ピヒラー(アルバンベルクSQ)、A.ギルバートなど、多くの指揮者がこのオーケストラの指揮・指導をしてきた。

　また、1998年・1999年11月に別府で行われた「別府アルゲリッチ音楽祭」では、共演したマルタ・アルゲリッチ(Pf)、イヴリー・ギトリス(Vn)、ミッシャ・マイスキー氏からその演奏に対して絶賛された。指揮者のチョン・ミョン・フン氏とは1998年11月、2000年8月、2001年9月と3回にわたり共演を行ない、桐朋学園オーケストラへの厚い信頼と評価は度々チョン・ミョン・フン氏の言葉として音楽誌や新聞などに紹介されている。
