Maestro Omachi studied composition at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and conducting at the Vienna Academy of Music under Hans Swarowsky. In 1957, a year after completing his studies, he became an assistant to Herbert von Karajan for tours with the Berlin Philharmonic and later the Vienna Philharmonic. In 1958 he made his debut at the Berlin Festival and the following year conducted the Berlin Philharmonic for the first time, becoming the youngest conductor up to that time.

　In 1961 he was appointed Chief Conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. At the request of the Tokyo metropolitan government, he became involved in the founding of the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra and was its conductor for two years(1965-1966). In 1967 he returned to the Tokyo Philharmonic as its chief conductor-a post he held until 1973. During this period he was also resident conductor of the opera house in Dortmund, Germany, and a guest conductor with numerous leading orchestras throughout the world; the Berlin Philharmonic, the Dresden Philharmonic, the NDR Symphony Orchestra of Hamburg, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the National Orchestra of Mexico and many others.

　In 1980 he became the first Japanese to conduct Madame Butterfly at the Vienna State Opera, leading to a close relationship with that opera house, highlighted by a televised production of Verdi's Attila. Among his many other notable opera productions were special performances of Turandot at the Shanghai Opera House(1992)and the Beijing Central Opera House(1995 and 1996)with all-Chinese casts.

　Maestro Omachi has been awarded high honors by the governments of Germany and Austria and by the city of Vienna. Since 1999 he has held the post of permanent conductor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.

　

　

　マエストロ大町陽一郎は1931年東京に生まれる。1954年東京芸術大学音楽学部作曲科卒業。在学中、渡邊暁雄、クルト・ヴェスに指揮法を学ぶ。同年ウィーン国立アカデミー留学、スワロフスキーの許で指揮法を学ぶ。1956年指揮科を卒業後は、カール・べーム、ヘルベルト・フォン・カラヤン、フランコ・フェラーラに師事し、60年に日本フィルを指揮して帰国演奏会を開き成功をおさめた。61年より10年間、東京フィルの常任指揮者としてその黄金時代を築く。

　一方、オペラの指揮者としても二期会や藤原歌劇団などでオペラ、オペレッタの指揮も数多く行う。68年からはドルトムント市立歌劇団の専属指揮者としても数多くのオペラ、オペレッタ、バレエ、ミュージカルの公演に従事し、貴重な体験を積む。指揮した外国の主要なオーケストラは、ベルリンフィル、ウィーン交響楽団等多数に及び、また、オペラ指揮者としては、ベルリン国立歌劇場、プラハ・スメタナ国立歌劇場に客演するなど、シンフォニーとオペラの両面で活躍している国際的指揮者。

　1980年2月、日本人として初めてウィーン国立歌劇場に登場。「蝶々夫人」を指揮して絶賛を博す。また、8月にはクリーヴランド管弦楽団を指揮してアメリカにデビューした。1982年より84年にかけてウィーン国立歌劇場の専属指揮者として、オペラ、バレエの公演を指揮した。

　1988年より2年間、ケルン日本文化会館館長として、日独文化交流に尽くした功績により1992年春、ドイツ連邦共和国功労勲章「大功労十字」を授与された。1992年10月には日中修交20周年記念公演として、上海歌劇院より招かれて、「トゥーランドット」の中国語による上演を3回指揮した。1995,96年には、北京中央歌劇院によって北京でのイタリア語による初演を行い、同歌劇院より名誉芸術顧問に任命される。1996年、日本人初のウィーン市名誉ゴールド・メダルを受賞。著書には、講談社刊「クラシック音楽へのすすめ」がある。ドイツ・ヨハン・シュトラウス協会名誉会員。東京芸術大学名誉教授。
