Dr. Emil SALIM (Indonesia, Co-Chair)
  Currently leading global environmentalism as Chair of the Preparatory Committee of the World Summit on Sustainable Development ("Earth Summit 2002"), and President of the Commission on Sustainable Development, United Nations. Born in Lahat, South Sumatera, graduated from the Faculty of Economy, University of Indonesia (1958), and received Master of Arts (1962) and Ph.D. (1964) from the Department of Economics, University of California at Berkeley. Minister of State for State Reform and Vice-Chair of the National Planning Board, 1971-73; Minister of Transportation, Communication and Tourism, 1978-83; Minister of State for Development Supervision and Environment, 1978-83; and Minister of State for Population and Environment, 1983-93. Co-Chair of the High Level Advisory Board for Sustainable Development, United Nations, 1993-98; and Co-Chair of the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, 1995-99. Professor for the Faculty of Economy (1975-) and Chair of the Center for Regional and Urban Studies (1999-) at University of Indonesia.
Dr. Ryokichi HIRONO (Japan, Co-Chair)
  Widely known as a leading Japanese scholar in international cooperation and for an active commitment to domestic and international public service. Received post-graduate education at the Department of Economics, University of Chicago (1954-59). Current positions in higher education include: Professor Emeritus of Seikei University; Professor of Teikyo University; Visiting Professor of both Graduate Institute of Policy Studies and Sophia University; etc. Published some 40 books and over 500 articles in scholarly journals and reports. Current public positions include: the Committee for Development Policy, Economic and Social Commission, United Nations (New York); the Central Environment Council, the Advisory Council on Official Development Assistance, and the Official Development Assistance Evaluation Committee, Government of Japan.
Dr. Yoshiko Y. NAKANO (Japan, Speaker)
  For nearly three decades, has led OISCA-International (please see Appendix C) as its President and dedicated spiritual-intellectual leader. Born in Kyoto, graduated from Gifu University, and received a doctorate from the Chinese Culture University (1972). Serving as Member of many Japanese public institutions including: the Study Group on Improvement of Official Development Assistance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Board of Trustees, the Japan Committee for Global Environment; Board of Councilors, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation; etc. Received awards and citations from the United Nations and the states of Japan, Philippines, Thailand, Fiji Islands, and Malaysia. Author of numerous books and articles. Books published in English include: For a Better World Tomorrow (1988); Mother Earth: An NGO proposal for actions to give a "Green Earth" to our children tomorrow (1989); A Message from OISCA to Mother Earth (1991); and Miraculous Life Chain: The Essence of Evolution from the Universe to Mankind (1994).
Mr. Seiken SUGIURA (Japan, Speaker)
  Senior Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Government of Japan, and Member of the House of Representatives. Born in Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, and graduated from the Faculty of Economics of University of Tokyo (1957). Admitted to the bar in 1972, and elected to the House of Representatives since 1986. Appointed twice as Parliamentary Vice Minister, for the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (1990) and the National Land Agency (1992). Appointed to head the Judicial Affairs Committee (1998) and the Research Commission on the Constitution (2000) of the House of Representatives. Currently, President of the Liberal Democratic Party of Aichi Prefecture.

Mr. A. M. C. K. B. ALAHAKOON (Sri Lanka, Presenter)
  Coordinator of Children's Forest Program (CFP), OISCA-International's participatory and experiential environmental education. Born in Kegale City, Sri Lanka. Participated in the National Youth Services Council (NYSC, under Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs) from 1985-92, and became Chair of the Federation of Youth Clubs for Kegalla District. Spent 1993 and 1997-98 in Japan as an OISCA trainee, specializing in agriculture and organizational skills; spent 1994-97 and 1998-2000 in Sri Lanka as a member of NYSC staff, CFP coordinator, and student, attaining Diploma in Marketing and Certificate in Computer Programming. Currently stationed in Aichi Prefecture (Japan) as a CFP promotion officer, explaining to the Japanese citizenry the importance of environmentalism and international cooperation.
Miss Rie AOI (Japan, Presenter)
  Deputy Leader of Muromi Sawayaka Club, Winner of the Love Green Award (2001) given to elementary school children with distinguished records in environmental activity and contribution. Currently in the sixth grade of Muromi Elementary School, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
Dr. Bishnu B. BHANDARI (Nepal, Panelist)
  Senior Research Fellow, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies in Kanagawa Prefecture (Japan) since 1998. Received Ph.D. in Rural Sociology from University of Wisconsin (USA) in 1985. From 1976-92, Associate Professor of the Tribhuvan University (Nepal); from 1992-98, Socio-economist of the IUCN Nepal. Published 13 books and over three dozen journal articles including "Environmental Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: Some Problems and Prospects" (2000) based on reports from 36 countries.
Mr. Muhammed Quamrul Islam CHOWDHURY (Bangladesh, Panelist)
  Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists and of the World Water Forum of Journalists. Chair of the Commonwealth Environmental Journalists Association and of the Forum of Environmental Journalists of Bangladesh. Received MSS in Economics from Dhaka University with honors (1980). Senior Reporter of the National News Agency BSS (1991-). Member of the High-Powered National Environment Committee (1995-). Organized and attended hundreds of national and international workshops, seminars, conferences and field trips. Author of hundreds of reports and articles on environmental and developmental issues published in national and international newspapers and journals. Wrote or edited a number of books.
Dr. Deborah Jean GANGLOFF (USA, Presenter)
  Executive Director of the American Forests (1996-). Received three degrees in Cultural Anthropology: B.A. (1975) from York College, City University of New York, and M.A. (1979) and Ph.D. (1995) from Rutgers University. Also well-experienced in psychological and archaeological researches. Author of over ten scholarly publications. Received the President's Award of American Forests (1992). Currently Chair of the Secretary of Agriculture's National Urban and Community Forestry Advisory Council (1999-). Being a social scientist, particularly interested in how people understand and interact with the environment; the "people side" of natural resource management.
Ms. Yumiko HANAI (Japan, Presenter)
  Chair of the Global School Project. Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and studied at Doshisha University in Kyoto while working in broadcasting service. After graduation, experienced documentary video-making and became self-employed. Concerned about the situation of Japanese educational system, in 1997 traveled to nine countries in the West, Islamic world, and former USSR, and interviewed 400 public authorities, school administrators, educators, NGO officers, etc., asking what "education" means to them. Hoping to promote society that allows children to appreciate the value of living, founded the Global School Project to make concrete contributions.
Dr. Sukehiro HASEGAWA (Japan, Speaker)
  Director, Office of the United Nations Development Programme in Tokyo (1999-). Received B.A. in Political Science from University of Michigan (USA), M.A. in Public International Administration from International Christian University (Tokyo), and Ph.D. in International Relations from Washington University (Missouri, USA). Contributions as a UN officer started in 1969 and has included: (Deputy) Resident Representative in Nepal (1978-80), Indonesia (1980-84), and the Pacific islands (1984-86); Deputy Executive Coordinator of the United Nations Volunteers in Geneva (1987-94); Director, Policy and Planning of the UN peace-keeping organizations in Somalia (1994); Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator of the UN system in Rwanda (1995); etc.
Mr. Masakazu ICHIMURA (Japan, Speaker)
  Expert on Environmental Policies, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). Born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, and received undergraduate, master's and doctoral education all at the University of Tokyo (1977-88) with focuses in Urban and Environmental Engineering. Contributed to environmentalism as officer of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Paris (1988-95), of the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center in Tokyo (1995-99), of the Royal Thai Government (1998), and of ESCAP in Bangkok (1999-).
Mr. Hitoshi IKEGUCHI (Japan, Panelist)
  Researcher, the Laboratory of Landscape Planning, Yamanashi Institute of Environmental Sciences (1997-). Received B.A. (1990) and M.A. (1992) in Agrobiology at University of Tokyo. From 1992-97, Researcher at the Division of Environmental Design, Museum of Nature & Human Activities, Hyogo Prefecture; from 1994-95, Co-operative Research Fellow at the Primate Institute of Kyoto University. Scholarly interests include ecological modeling of the relationships between species and environments and between communities and environments; landscape ecology including human activities; GIS aided description of landscape ecological features; etc.
Miss Yu LUO "Jane" (China, Panelist)
  Member of the Guizhou Youth Environment Network, Guizhou Province in southwestern China. Currently 13 years old and in the third grade of Guiyang No.7 Middle School. Concerned with environmental issues since 1998. Founding member of the Guizhou Youth Environment Network, which is editing an environmental action Handbook for local youth and adults. Participated in the ASEM Symposium on Forest Conservation & Sustainable Development held in Guiyang (2001) as Volunteer Assistant. Attended the Stakeholders' Meeting for North-East Asia in Preparation for the World Summit on Sustainable Development ("Earth Summit 2002") held in Beijing (2001) as the youngest participant. Fluent in the Chinese, English, and Japanese languages.
Dr. Hemanta R. MISHRA (Nepal, Panelist)
  Senior NGO Specialist, the Office of Environment and Social Development, Asia Development Bank (1998-). Received Ph.D, in Natural Resources Management from University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Senior Environmental Specialist (NGO-Coordination) at the Global Environment Facility, Washington, D.C. (1998-2001). Author of several publications including three books and those in the German, Japanese and French languages. Awards and recognitions include: The J. Paul Getty Conservation Prize; Honorary Citizen of Fort Worth, Texas; and Three Gold Medals from the King of Nepal. His pioneering work has been a subject of documentary films for television in USA, UK, Germany and Japan, and his field research on Tigers has been selected for video display at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington.
Mr. Shigeyuki OKAJIMA (Japan, Discussant)
  Widely known free lance Environmental Journalist, Professor of Aoyama University, and Director of the Japan Environmental Education Forum, all since 1999. Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, and majored German literature at Sophia University (Tokyo), graduating in 1967. Received post-graduate education in cultural anthropology at University of Tokyo. Worked for the Yomiuri Newspaper from 1969-99. Awarded the Global 500 Roll of Honour for Environmental Achievement by UNEP in 1988. (Co-)authored a dozen books, and edited or translated a few others. Currently a prominent advisor to the Government of Japan, participating in many public committees including those belonging to Ministries of Environment, of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, of Education, Culture, Sports, Sciences and Technology, of Foreign Affairs, and of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
Mr. Ken OKANIWA (Japan, Panelist)
  Director of the Climate Change Division, the Multilateral Cooperation Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Japan). Graduated from Hitotsubashi University and joined the Ministry in 1984. First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York from 1994-98.
Dr. Kirit S. PARIKH (India, Speaker)
  Professor Emeritus and Former Director (Vice Chancellor) of the Indira Ghandi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR). Received both a Sc.D. in Civil Engineering and Master's Degree in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Having been Professor of Economics since 1968, written or edited some 20 books. Highly regarded by the Government of India, and has been Member of the Economic Advisory Council of five Prime Ministers (Rajiv Gandhi, V. P. Singh, Chandra Shekhar, P. V. Narsimha Rao, and Atal Bihari Vajpayee), the National Committee for Environmental Planning & Co-ordination, the National Committee on Science and Technology, and the Fuel Policy Committee.

Miss Yuki SAKAI (Japan, Presenter)

Ms. Hanne Marstrand STRONG (USA, Presenter & Panelist)
  President of the Manitou Foundation (1988-) and Manitou Institute (1994-), and "Advocate of Spiritual and Ecological Revolution." Born and educated in Copenhagen, Denmark, educated in Design and Planning, and won the 1974 Excellence in Design Award from the New York State Association of Architects. Received extensive spiritual training from North and South American shamans, Tibetan Buddhist Lamas, Hindu masters, Sufis and other mystics. Organized three international conferences for children, youth and handicapped in Vancouver in 1977, and two more in Rio de Janeiro during the Earth Summit in 1992. Traveled to over 100 countries to attend conferences as a speaker on ecumenical communities, sustainability, and spiritually based environmental education. Founded numerous NGOs for Native Americans and others.
Dr. Monthip Sriratana TABUCANON (Thailand, Panelist)
  Deputy Director-General, the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, Thailand (1999-). Received B. Sc in Chemistry from Mahidol University (1976), M.Sc in Environmental Engineering (1978), and Ph.D, in Urban Engineering from University of Tokyo (1992). Advisor to the Parliamentary Committee Member on Natural Resource and Environment in 1998. Received 1999 Award for Thailand Best Environmental Administrator from the Foundation for the Thai Society and the Economic Outlook Newspaper. Current responsibilities focus on the promotion of research and development in the fields of environmental and natural resource development at the national and regional levels.
Mr. Nigel TANSLEY-THOMAS (UK, Presenter)
  Director of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) since 1996. After graduating from Trinity College Cambridge, taught in a secondary school for nine years. Joined the Tidy Britain Group in 1986, and took over responsibility for the Blue Flag Campaign in the UK in 1989. Became the European Coordinator of FEE's Eco-Schools programme, and later in 1996 became Director of FEE when the Secretariat moved to the UK.
Mr. Babil Pachakkil Kalari THOTATHIL (India, Panelist)
  Currently 16 years old and in the second year at the OISCA Academy, a high school located in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture (Japan). Member of its Environmental Committee. Graduated from the St. Joseph's Boys Higher Secondary School in Calicut City, Kerala State (south India), where participated in such OISCA activities as the Children's Forest Program, forestation projects, and Social Awareness Raising Program. Currently helping to improve the environment of Hamamatsu area, planting mangrove trees in Lake Hamana, participating in community environmental campaigns, forest restoration movement, and playing important roles at school in reducing rubbish and energy consumption.
Mr. Yoshihisa TOGO (Japan, Presenter)
  Executive Director, the Japan Committee for UNICEF (1991-). Received B.A. in Political Science & International Relations from the Gakushuin University (1957). Officer of the Japan Air Line (JAL) from 1957-89, stationed in Europe, Latin America, and Japan. Joined the Japan Committee for UNICEF in 1989 on loan from JAL. Also, Director of the National Assembly for Youth Development (Japan); Council of the Asia/Pacific Cultural Center for UNESCO; Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Group of Japan Committee for UNICEF; and Central Committee Member of the National Federation of UNESCO Association in Japan.
Mr. Paul VARE (UK, Presenter)
  Director of Education and Communication, the Living Earth Foundation, London (1999-). Received BA in Geography from the Lancaster University with honors (1982), Post Graduate Certificate of Education from the St. Martins College in Lancaster (1983), and MPhil from the Bristol University (1996) with a thesis titled: "Serendipity or Schooling?: identifying the process of environmental learning." Specialist in environmental education with over 17 years' of experience, and accomplished trainer, researcher, adviser and project planner. Scholarly contributions include : "ECoSA: a report on a pan-African environmental education survey" (1998); "Schooling in Transition: a view from environmental education" (1998); "Inside Story: a researcher's eye-view of a pan-African research programme" (1997); "Education and Communication for Sustainability in Africa" (1996); etc.
Dr. Yoshinori YASUDA (Japan, Speaker)
  Professor of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (1994-). Born in Mie Prefecture, graduated from the Graduate Course of Faculty of Science, Tohoku University (1972) and received Ph.D. in Science (1978). Taught at Hiroshima University (1977-88), Kyoto University (1996-99), Humboldt University (Berlin, 1997), Reitaku University (1997-). Winner of the Chunichi Cultural Prize (1996). Specializing in Environmental Archaeology, interested in reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment of ancient civilizations. Widely known as the author of Forest and Civilization (2000).
