日下 森さんは、日本人の美しい心を言ったわけですが、そんなことで世界都市はそううまくいくはずがない。ロンドンの場合ですが、そこで発達したエチケットがある。子供のころ、イギリス人の家族とつき合っていました。訪ねていったとき、オーバーを脱いでドアをノックするものではない、オーバーを着たままノックせよと言われました。これは長居をする気はないことをあらわしている。どうぞいらっしゃいと言って家に上げてくれるが、15分たったら必ず帰りますと言わなきゃいけないとも言われました。引き止められたら、もう少しいてもいいということを子供のころに厳しくしつけられた。多分森さんは、家に上げてもらったら、とことん溶け込まなきゃいけない、15分で帰っては冷たいと考えるでしょう。そういう世界都市なりのエチケットが発達していくのでないか。
青木 京都は、よく一見(げん)さんお断りということもある。京都の人に呼ばれて、うっかり戸口に入ったら大変なことで、戸口の外にいなくちゃいけないとか、ロンドンと同じようなしきたりがあります。東京は、守るべき行動基準はほとんど何もありません。これは世界都市の1つの問題かと思います。

ヤルマン I am not sure if I can respond. This has been a very rich experience indeed, with so many extraordinary points of view coming through. I mean, my mind is very fast indeed, all sort of exciting things. Most important, I have actually visited Professor Aoki in his home. He did invite me, in Osaka, and that was very charming indeed. But just a few points.
Mr. Jinnai was speaking very interestingly, and I entirely agree with him on this question of newness and oldness, and also what Aoki was talking about in terms of cultures being divided. I think all cultures are now divided. European cultures are divided in their own way. There's a great deal of interest in Asia; they are looking to learn about Asian civilizations. When I teach at Harvard, and my courses include of course Hinduism and Buddhism as well as Islam, and I also speak about the Far East. And the students are extremely interested.
As far as the particular situation of Turkey and Japan is concerned, I think that these are very unusual countries in the sense that they were the only ones that were able to keep their identity separate, independent., when the entire world was colonized.
