International Conference on "Distributed Electricity Services in Africa" \5,617,762

A team led by a SYLFF Fellow at Princeton University, a SYLFF-endowed institution in the United States, convened an international conference on electric power supply policies for photovoltaic power generation in Africa. The six-day conference was held in Cape Town, South Africa from June 1 to 6, 1999. Twenty six (26) students and academics, along with 23 specialists, participated in the conference. Participants were from Princeton University and other SYLFF-endowed institutions, including the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Nairobi. User education and the formation of a network of local citizens, governments and corporations were deemed necessary for the installment and maintenance of power systems. Findings were compiled in a policy proposal report to be used in educational activities for spreading the use of photovoltaic power generation systems. Students, including SYLFF Fellows from Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as faculty members and experts, gathered for nonpartisan discussion regarding the state of ineffective electricity distribution on the African continent due to geographical restrictions and financial difficulties. From an academic approach that took into account society and technology, the participants offered proposals for concrete solutions that demonstrated the potential of contributing to regional development.
