AUSTRALIA-JAPAN NEW INITIATIVE FOR APEC 1999 \4,883,844
Timed to coincide with the 10th year of the establishment of APEC, this workshop encouraged active debate on the role and significance of APEC. Participants included politicians from ruling and opposition parties, as well as scholars and journalists from Japan and Australia. Results of the workshop were provided to former Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and Australian Prime Minister John Howard as a policy proposal.

A quarter of a century has passed since the first summit of the leading industrialized countries was held in 1975. During this time, the situation surrounding international society has changed greatly, altering the significance of the summit. The G8 Preparatory Conference is held as a new instrument to increase the effectiveness of G8 summits to promote greater peace and security in international society.
