At the same time, the Division supports Japanese university faculty to teach abroad and administrators to participate in professional development overseas. These projects hopefully contribute to the internationalization of higher education in Japan and other countries.

In addition, the Scholarship Division supports international conferences convened by graduate students in the social sciences and humanities fields, mainly at SYLFF-endowed institutions. The Division provides fellowship recipients ―future leaders― with venues for exchange and collaboration across national and regional boundaries.

Public Relations Division

The Public Relations Division actively promoted the production and dissemination of information along the following themes: "Maritime Asia," "Creating Countries, Moving Beyond Countries," "World City―Tokyo," and the "Culture Entertainment Industry." Activities included the production, broadcast and creation of a video series titled Japan and the Sea, the production of the Glossary of Japanese Transport Policy for foreigner, sponsorship of the "Religion and Asia" symposium, and the invitation of Poland's Minister of Justice, Hanna Suchocka. In addition, the Division worked to develop effective methods of providing information by accumulating results and data garnered from project activities in each Division, and by disseminating data on project activities and results to the Diet, in reports, publications and on its Web site.

Operations Development Expenses

To improve the quality of the Foundation's projects and build a new paradigm in the 21st century operations development expenses were appropriated for three projects, namely for the consignment of research on "Ocean Culture and Civilization," the production and broadcast of television programs to encourage active policy debate, and the invitation of prominent foreigners to Japan. We believe these activities contribute to the intellectual property of the world and broaden the potential of the Foundation's new projects.

We strived to maintain and expand our financial infrastructure by bolstering the Foundation's endowment and creating funds to stably promote the aforementioned projects. We received support for our endeavors from The Nippon Foundation, Japan Motorboat Racing Association, Federation of Prefectural Association of Motorboat Racing and the Japan Boat Racing Center.

The Tokyo Foundation also received aid and assistance from The Nippon Foundation to cover its operating costs.
