Diagnosis of Pleural TB

in Areas with Adequate Diagnostic Facilities

　

・Diagnosis of suspected TB empyema

- Always perform thoracentesis to obtain pleural fluid

- AFB smear and gram stain usually sufficient to make diagnosis

・Diagnosis of suspected TB pleurisy

- Thoracentesis to obtain pleural fluid for smear & culture

- Pleural biopsy with histological examination & culture

- Single pleural biopsy has diagnostic yield of 75%; double pleural biopsies have combined yield of 90%
