前号(MIRC News Letter No.7、pl-2)で紹介したように、MIRCではJODCに未収録の都道府県水産試験場の観測データを、水産庁と協力して品質管理を施してデータベース化する作業を行ってきた。成果については水産庁のフォーマットで水産庁にフィードバックするとともに、JODCの新しいフォーマットFETIにも変換を行いJODCに送付した。ただ、将来のデータ管理での便宜から考え、FETIフォーマットに準拠しながらも、一部拡張したフォーマットでの独自のデータベース、MIRC Ocean Dataset 2001 (MODS2001)を構築した。このデータベースにはJODCに既に集積されているデータにMIRCが品質チェックを行った結果も含まれている。MODS2001はCD-ROMの形で2001年2月から提供できる体制を整えつつある。MODS2001では船舶コードとして、コールサインを採用しており、調査機関コード等も整合性のあるものに改められた。品質管理については、観測日付・位置チェック、重複チェック、船速チェック・海陸チェック、観測値の諸種のレンジチェック、観測深度チェック、密度逆転チェック等である。その方法は、原則として米国NODCの用いている方法に準拠しているが、MIRC独自の方策も加味されている。このMIRCで採用された品質管理手法の概要は鈴木ら(2001)に与えられている。より詳細な説明は、データセットそのものの説明とともに、MIRCテクニカルレポートNo.1として発刊され、データセットのCD-ROMに添付する形で配布することを考えている。
MODS2001は、海洋研究者をはじめとする多くのデータ利用者のお役に立つものと確信しているが、MIRC自身においてもこのデータセットをその研究の基礎として、あるいは諸種のデータプロダクツ(水温・塩分等の統計図表)に利用していくことになる。そのようなデータプロダクツの一例としてはMIRC News Letter No. 6(p3-4)に紹介した「沿岸水位による流れの分類と本州南岸の海流統計」があげられる。現在、巡視船によるADCP観測データを中心に、わが国近海の海流データセットを作成中であるが、それと合わせて利用していただければ幸いである。

As discussed in the previous MIRC News Letter ｢?No.7｢?, MIRC collected oceanographic data observed by Prefectural Fisheries Experimental Stations, which had not been archived in JODC database, in cooperation with Japan Fisheries Agency. We conducted quality-control to created new database. The results were fed back to Japan Fisheries Agency according to their format. We also created database according to new data format of JODC (FETI), and sent them to JODC. In parallel, we created MIRC Ocean Dataset 2001 ｢?MODS2001 ｢?for convenience on future data management business. The format follows basically to JODC data format FETI, but some expansion was made in its metadata including error flags, quality control information and so on. We also applied quality control for all the data accumulated in JODC, and these checked data are included in MODS2001. Call Sign is used for ship code in MODS2001, and reasonable arrange of organization code was done. The quality checks applied are date and position check, duplication check, ship-speed check, land-sea check, various range checks of observed values, depth check, density inversion check and so on. MIRC developed several new techniques, though the quality-control methods are basically the same as US NODC applied to compile World Ocean Database 1998. The quality-control procedure is given in Suzuki et al (2001), and in MIRC Technical Report No. 1(2001) in which details of the database and the data formats are given. MODS2001 is ready to be distributed in CD-ROM form after February 2001 together with the technical report No. 1.
MODS2001 would be useful to various data users including investigators in universities and institutions. MIRC will use MODS2001 to produce various data product such statistical tables and atlases. One of the examples was introduced in MIRC News Letter No. 6 (Classification of current patterns to the south of Honshu, Japan, by using data of coastal tide gauge stations). We are compiling oceanic current dataset in the seas near Japan by utilizing ADCP data observed by patrol vessels. The results would be available also in CD-ROM by the end of 2001 fiscal years.
