・To develop some bus service corridors with exclusive bus ways during peak-hours in the metropolitan areas that are equipped with priority signals and a modern communication control system...

・To do marketing service regularly in order to obtain travel demand etc.

2.3 Metro Development Directions

Objectives: formulating modern and important trunk lines for mass transit; effectively integrate with bus routes towards gradually ease urban traffic congestion, etc.

(1) Related studies during previous years

・During 1996-1999, the TDSI South, under the assignment of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee and Ho Chi Minh City Urban Transport and Public Work Service, and in coordination with relevant agencies in HCMC, worked out the Plan for Urban Railway System up to 2020, and the years after that.

・During 1996-1997, the Dressden University, German, in close ordination with TDSI South, conducted Pre-Feasibility Study for 3 metro lines in the old inner urban area of HCM City.

(2) Major indicators in metro development direction

Estimated technical parameters of the metro system are as follows:

・Tractive force 1.2/1.5kV DC

・Train length 3 double-carriers (or 6 20m-carriers)

・Train weight (full) Mw=360tons

・Platform length 125m

・Distance between 2 stations 700-1300m

・Maximum speed 80km/h

・Shortest interval 4 minutes (2 minutes)

・Track gauge 1435mm

・Ip max 40‰

Estimated Metro lines:

1) Radial Northwest−Southeast: 47km

Ben Thanh−Hoa Hung−Chien Thang Park−Tan Son Nhat (6.95km): high priority

2) Circle line in inner urban area: 34km

Ben Thanh−Binh Tay Market (7km): priority

3) Ben Thanh−District 2−District 9−Thu Duc (East−Northeast): 27.5km

4) HCMC−Bien Hoa: 30+16=46km

Hoa Hung−Bien Hoa (30km): high priority

Hoa Hung−Phu Lam−Binh Chanh (16km)

2.4 Implementation

・Government's policy on encouragement of local and foreign investment: promulgated

・Source: State Budget, mobilized funds from transport users and other sources, local or foreign investments in form of BOT, BT, exchange of land for infrastructure, soft loans.

・Expansion of cooperation with foreign companies

Since August, 2000, under the direction of MOT and HCMC PPC, the TDSI South together with JTCA have conducted further preparatory work on the project on HCMC Metro, namely a small-scale demand survey along the two most important corridors: Tan Son Nhat−Ben Thanh and Ben Thanh−Binh Tay Market, whose results show rapidly increasing demand, which exceeds all previous forecasts.
