Solid waste generated by the hotel and restaurant operations are either incinerated or landed. Waste that is landed is recucles whenever possible. By category, the wastes are as follows:

hotel & restaulant waste

Packaging materials for the many supplies used by the ships contribute considerable paper and plastic waste. Much of hte waste is familiar to us as part of our daily lives: coffee creames, plastic straws, paper napkins, daily newspapers. To minimize the amount of waste that is generated, the company works aggressively to minimize the amount of packaging used and to find alternatives which will produce less waste. Examples of improvement in this area include the reducation of havy-duty plastic containers delivered onboard-these were replaced with "bag in box" containers which are incinerated onboard once emptied. Wooden pallets are stripped upon receipt and returned to the suppliers in an effort to recycle and re-use.

Paper and plastics are incinerated on board or landed for recycling or disposal. Paper is incinerated because it adds fuel to the incinerator for wastes that are more difficult to burn, such as wet food waste. Heavy plastics, such as plastic pails arealanded, and the company has been working with port agents to develop recycling opportunities for these plastics. Cardboard, particularly and packaging, is bundled and recycled in many ports.

Each guest generates approximately 2 ponds of trash per day. However, the packing materials from consumables and spare parts for a ship generate up to 15 tons of waste in a single day. A Volkswagen Beetle weighs 1.3 tons, and one day of this packing material is the equivalent of 11.5 Beetles.
