Production also ceased at a former New Sulzer Diesel factory in Mantes in France, and was transferred to Italy. The Mantes factory meanwhile has been given over entirely to service activities. It is possible that further changes might be made. Following the split-up of the Cummins Wartsila joint venture (see Section 2.2), Wartisla Power Divisions inherited production facilities in France, at Milhouse (where the 200 and 220 size engines are made) and at Surgeres (where the UDX engines are made).
In Finland the company manufactures three types of engines in two factories (the W32 and W20 in Vaasa and the W46 in Turku), in the Netherlands two types in one factory (the W26 and W28SG in Zwolle), in Italy two types in one factory (the W64 and ZA40 in Trieste) and in France three types in two factories (the 200 and 220 in Mulhouse and UDX in Surgeres).
Each of these ten engine types is different, with the respective factories specialising in making certain engine types in order to gain efficiencies in production. At the same time, there is sufficient capacity, equipment and expertise at each of the sites to make other engine types if demand for particular engine types cannot be satisfied by the designated factory. For example, the Wartsila 46 engine is normally produced only at the company's factory in Turku in Finland, but currently demand is so high that additional units are being manufactured at the company's factory in Italy.
The Italian factory is the single largest production operation and is where the biggest engines are made. These engines are up to 30 meters long, 6 meters high and 3 meters wide, with an output of 66MW. In addition the company has assembly facilities in India and the USA as well as a propeller factory in Norway, although the latter is in the process of being sold to John Crane - Lips.
The company's engine factories are based at the following addresses:
