Wartsila Power Divisions operates the ISO 9000 quality standard in each of its factories and in addition is introducing further quality systems that are being piloted within individual operations before being extended throughout its global network, initially its factories and subsequently administration, sales and service operations. These cover total quality, continuous improvement and environmental management.

2.2 Technical Cooperation

Wartsila Power Divisions has formed an alliance with John Crane - Lips (part of the TI Group), the world's largest manufacturer of propellers. The alliance is based on the marketing of a package of products and does not involve any joint ownership or cross ownership. The equipment packages consist of engines and gearboxes supplied by Wartsila Power Divisions and propellers provided by John Crane - Lips, with Wartsila Power Divisions taking the lead in marketing the package, under the name Wartsila-Lips Marine Power Systems. The agreement between the two companies took effect in June 2000 and is open ended (i.e. there is no final date).

Wartsila Power Divisions is engaged in some joint projects with universities, technical schools and a technical institute of the Finnish Government.

Wartsila Power Divisions has a 50/50 joint venture in Japan with Hitachi Zosen relating to the manufacture of Wartsila 32 engines, its most popular product. Wartsila Power Divisions believes that the joint venture enables it to be closer to its Japanese customers than it would be if trying to sell direct from Europe. Hence, the joint venture enables it to access the Japanese market more easily.

In 1995 the then Wartsila Diesel and Cummins Engine Corporation entered into an agreement to jointly develop and produce two families of engines, the CW170 and CW200. These engines represented the smallest of the Wartsila Power Divisions range and the biggest of the Cummins range. Towards the end of 1999 the joint venture company Cummins Wartsila was completely dissolved. This followed five years of losses whilst introducing these products to the market and an agreement between the partners that they should independently take forward each engine. Consequently the 170 family has become a Cummins product, with the 200 family being incorporated into the Wartsila Power Divisions range. It is anticipated however that it will be mainly used for non-marine applications.

Wartsila Power Divisions has active license agreements with the following companies:
