2.1 Manufacturing Profile
Wartsila Power Divisions designs and manufactures engines for both marine and land applications. The engines are exactly the same whatever their use.
The product range covers both former Wartsila and NSD engines, in respect of which there was no overlap at all. The Wartsila engines are four-stroke medium-speed engines with the NSD engines being two-stroke low-speed engines. The only NSD medium-speed engine is of a different size (40 cm cylinder bore) to any made by Wartsila. The combination of the two brands gives the company a broad product offering across both the two- and four-stroke ranges.
The company's principal models are described below.
Two-stroke Engines
RTA96C
This is a 960 mm bore engine with a power output of 5,490 kW per cylinder (7,470 bhp) at 100 rpm. It has a power range up to a maximum of 65,880 kW. The motivation for designing the engine was the anticipated growth in containership size.
RTA84C
This model was introduced in 1988, as an up-rated version of the RTA84. It has a bore of 840 mm. Design improvements led to an uprating from 3,820 kW (5,200 bhp) per cylinder at 100 rpm to 4,050 kW (5,510 bhp) at 102 rpm. The engine covers a power range up to 48,600 kW.
RTA62U
These are low-speed engines, typically used in Panamax bulkers. They cover the power range 11,425-18,280 kW at 115 rpm.
RTA48T and RTA58T
These models have been specifically designed for the propulsion of tankers and bulkers in the range 20,000-90,000 dwt. They have cylinder bores of 480 and 580 mm respectively, and maximum continuous outputs of 1,455 and 2,125 kW per cylinder at 127 and 105 rpm respectively.
