2. TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES

2.1 Manufacturing Profile

In respect of its diesel engines for the marine market the company supplies a number of models. Perhaps best known are the Bergen B- and K- series, previously part of the Ulstein range. These are available as in-line or vee-types, with outputs ranging from 600-8,750 kW in 3 to 18 cylinder configuration. The Bergen range of engines are used in commercial and military vessels, cruise ships, fishing vessels and support vessels for the offshore oil industry.

The integration of VUMS into Rolls-Royce brought together the Bergen and Allen diesel engine ranges. In the future it is intended to combine the recently announced Bergen B32:40 and Allen 5000 ranges of medium-speed diesel engines to span outputs from 3,000 kW to 9,500 kW. The first B32:40 production engine is now being built for delivery in November 2000. Although Allen engines have been predominantly used for land-based applications, Rolls-Royce intends to explore marine possibilities and in particular is considering producing a marine version of the new Allen 5000 series.

In addition, the company makes two Crossley Pielstick engines under licence, the PC2 and PA6.

Gas turbines have traditionally only been used in naval applications, and the intention is now to pursue opportunities in the commercial sector. In order for Rolls-Royce to be able to pursue these opportunities, most (but not all) of its product development activity relates to gas turbines.
