2. TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICES

2.1 Manufacturing Profile

MTU believes that its particular strength is being able to offer customers a complete service in designing and supplying complete propulsion systems, including control systems.

The company has established a quality system in conformity to ISO 9001, certified by Det Norske Veritas.

MTU manufactures engines for 4 markets: marine, power generator, rail and vehicles (heavy vehicles and tanks). Marine engines account for around 60 per cent of sales revenue. The marine engine range comprises six main series (some are multiple series) extending up to 7,400 kW in the diesel range, plus one gas turbine (LM2500), which is available in two models.

In recent years, the MTU product range has been greatly extended. Today, the company offers prime contractor services for complete propulsion and on-board electricity generation systems for all types of ships. This assures "start-to-finish" responsibility for everything from planning through supply of equipment to final acceptance of the vessel by the customer. Combined diesel/gas turbine propulsion systems are offered not only for use in large naval vessels - they are increasingly being installed in fast yachts and incorporated in modern ferry propulsion concepts.

MTU's diesel engines for marine vessels are as follows:

The most successful engine series in terms of sales is the 396, the main application of which is in high speed catamarans, but is also used in a variety of commercial, naval and government vessels as well as non-marine applications. The 396 has been on the market since the early 1980s and evolved from previous engine series.
