The newly developed S90MC-C engine version is utilised in VLCCs. Not only has this engine type been up-rated, it also conforms to the emission limits of the most recent IMO regulations.
The engine versions for container ship propulsion have also been undergoing further development. As a result, the K98MC-C engine was developed for the next generation of container ships with 6,000-8,000 TEU capacity. The 12 cylinder version of this new engine type develops a unit output of 93,000 hp and will be the largest ever built by any manufacturer. To date however, no orders for this engine have been received.
Development activities with the family of large medium-speed four-stroke engines have focused on further improvements in economy and reliability. Emphasis was placed on the reduction of production and operating costs, and on ensuring longer lifetimes and maintenance intervals for important wear parts.
