2.4 Supply Capacity
The company operates in a 50,000 sq. m. factory on a 200,000 sq. m. site in Kiel in northern Germany. The engine assembly hall is equipped with 32 assembly stations and around 300 engines are completed each year with an aggregate output volume of around 1,000MW. This represents a doubling of output volumes over the past five years.
Over recent years the company has been building and selling an increasing number of engines. This resulted in production capacity being fully utilised. In order to increase capacity the company acquired an engine factory in Rostock, previously occupied by the two-stroke engine builder DMR (Diesel Motoren Rostock). This factory was constructed in 1992 and is a very modern facility. It had however been empty since DMR went out of business. Caterpillar Motoren is currently in the process of moving production of its largest engine, the M43, to Rostock. Production at Rostock will commence on completion of the current investment and re-organisation which will convert the facility from a two-stroke engine factory to a four-stroke engine factory. The operation at Rostock will be managed as an extension of the Kiel factory, and will undertake assembly, testing, painting and shipping of engines, with key components continuing to be machined in Kiel.
