It is an assembly, test and paint facility that began production in 1996. The company was originally established to manufacture Electricity Power Generation (EPG) engines but now also produces marine engines. The factory produces between 12-15 engines each year and these are sold almost exclusively to Chinese customers.
Caterpillar Motoren does not have any licence agreements with other companies, although many years ago MaK did have a licensee in Japan. The philosophy of the company today is that it is in the best position to manufacture its own engines, in addition to which it would not want to be competing with licensees for contracts to supply spare parts and provide after sales services.
2.3 After Sales Service
Through its own network and through its agents, Caterpillar Motoren has a presence in the following countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Denmark, Egypt, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Indonesia, Italy, Korea (Rep. of), Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom and USA.
Sales and service operations have been re-organised relatively recently. As from 1 January 1999 seven Regional Operating Units were created, supported by Centralised Support Groups in Kiel. The aim was to be able to get closer to customers by ensuring a strong local presence.
Caterpillar Motoren service stations and sales offices are divided into 7 geographical areas as defined by the company itself. These are shown in the table below.
