SUBARU 6,843-dwt Cable Laying & Repairing Vessel

SUBARU, a maximum class cable layer in Japan, was ordered b NTT World Engineering Marine Corporation, designed and built at MHI Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works, and delivered on February 16,1999.

After her training voyage, the SUBARU is expected by various quarters to play a principal part in helping to lay international submarine optical fiber cables, which will become more important in the near future.

Features

1. Propulsive and maneuvering performance

In order to deal with low load and low speed work over long periods (more than 40 days at 6 knots), an electric propulsion system was adopted. The ship is provided with two sets of rotating nozzle propellers (Azimuth propellers) and two sets of bow thrusters, which are comprehensively controlled b a Dynamic Positioning System, so that the ship can carry out accurate cable laying and repair work.

2. Cable laying capacity

The ship has a large cable tank capacity and a great overall load capacity. The ship, therefore, can efficiently engage in long-distance submarine cable laying work.

3. Cable-handling equipment

In order to realize a high efficiency in her work, the cable-handling equipment is concentrated in the stern. The arrangement of the linear and drum cable engines in a wide cable-handling space helps to realize efficient and highly accurate work.

4. Seaworthiness

The ship has good seaworthiness with a sufficient freeboard and one set of anti-rolling tank so as to carryout each cable work safely and surely under severe conditions, such as 3 knots current, 35 knots wind and sea state 6.

5. Living comfort

In order to secure good comfort, the ship has a reasonable arrangement and construction incorporating sufficient noise and vibration reduction.

6. Labor saving

The ship is designed to permit labor-saving during laying work with a integrated Cable Laying Support System and, also, in the engine room in compliance with the "M0 " requirement of NK.
