HERMES ISLAND 75,615-dwt Panamax Bulk Carrier
The 75,615-dwt Panamax bulk carrier HERMES ISLAND built at Chiba Works of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES), was delivered to her owner Himawari Shipping (Panama) S.A. in May 2000.
The capacity of 75,615-dwt is the largest among the Panamax bulkers. Superior hull form with a seven-hold and seven-hatch arrangement provides a larger capacity of 89,000 m3 than the previous Panamax bulkers. Super-wide hatch openings are used to facilitate cargo handling work. Ballasting work is facilitated using two 1,500 m3/hr ballast pumps.
The main engine uses the latest model of Mitsui-MAN B&W 7S50MCC with low fuel consumption performance for energy saving. The Mitsui Integrated Propeller Boss (MIPB) is also installed to increase propulsion efficiency. The IACS UR for Bulk Carrier Safety is applied, emphasizing watertight bulkheads, double bottom, and longitudinals to ensure protection from flooding.
Special reinforcement of mooring equipment is designed to secure safety in cargo unloading even at ports facing Sea of Japan, where conditions become severe and rough in winter.
