こどものお話、美しい歌
1985年から88年までイギリスのヨーク大学で学び、博士号を取得。活動的な作曲家、指揮者、現代音楽の推進者として称賛されている。89年から香港中国大学で教鞭をとり、97年以来、香港交響楽団のレジデント・コンポーザー。
《こどものお話、美しい歌》「1998年子供合唱音楽世界会議」および「国際子供合唱フェスティバル1998」の課題曲として委嘱された。この作品は、2部合唱とオーケストラ(ピアノ伴奏に置き換え可能)のために書かれ、2つの言語、すなわち中国語と英語のテキストである。音楽は、話すときとはまったく異なる時間の長さをもっていて、その違いは使用される言語の種類によって異なるという事実については、ほとんど議論の余地はない。作曲家が、言葉の数が多くて負担のかかった英語のテキストを短くするのはいつものことであるが、一方では中国語のテキストは、音楽に必要な豊かさを与えるにはあまりにも言葉が少ないと不満を漏らす人もいる。テキストが同じ作品の2つの言語ヴァージョンを同時に作曲することで、この作品は、上述した矛盾から生じるあらゆる挑戦に直面する。

Childhood Stories. Beautiful songs," Theme Song for the "World conference for children's choral Music 1998"
Victor CHAN received his PhD degree from the University of York, UK where he studied from 1985 to 1988. He is celebrated as an active composer, conductor and contemporary music promoter. He has been teaching at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and was appointed Composer-in-residence at the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997.
CHILDHOOD STORIES, BEAUTIFUL SONGS (1998) was commissioned as the theme music for the 'World Conference for Children's Choral Music 1998' and the 'International Children's Choir Festival 1998'. The piece is written for double chorus and Orchestra (replaceable by piano), with a text in two languages, namely Chinese and English. There is little dispute about the fact that music has a time-span very different from that of speech, and the difference varies in degree according to the kind of language chosen for use. While it is the usual practice for composers to cut short and English text overburdened with wordy information, others are complaining that there are too few words in a Chinese text to give the necessary body to the music. By setting music simultaneously to the two language versions of the same piece of text, this composition faces all the challenges arising from the above contradictions

「無伴奏女声合唱のための愛唱歌抄」
1958年仙台生まれ。桐朋学園大学作曲科を経て同大学研究科を修了。
三善晃に師事。85、87年、西ドイツのハンバッハ賞国際作曲コンクール、管弦楽、室内楽両部門でそれぞれ1位受賞。91年村松賞受賞。
《愛唱歌抄I》は、文部省唱歌として愛唱され続けてきた名曲を中心に編んだもので、四季(春から春まで)を歌った6つの曲により成っている。唱歌として一般に知られている歌は音楽としては極めて素朴だ。よって唱歌の編曲は、ほぼ作曲に等しいものであり、それぞれを性格の異なるインヴェンションとして捉え、女声のア・カペラでしか表現できないフォルムとポリフォニーの試みを追求した。長い年月をかけて唱歌を培ってきた豊かな日本の音楽的土壌を体のどこかで感じ、その大きな流れの中で新たな創意を見出してゆくことが、唱歌との積極的な出遇いにつながるだろう。女声合唱団青い鳥の委嘱作品。栗山文昭指揮、同合唱団第4回定期演奏会において初演された。
SUZUKI Teruaki
From Japanese Children's Songs
Born in Japan, 1958. He graduated in composition from Toho Gakuen School of Music and Graduate School of the same School. He studied under Akira Miyoshi. He was awarded 1st Prizes in Humbacher Preis international Composition Competition (both Orchestral work section in 1985 and Chamber Music section in 1987) in West Germany. He was also awarded Muramatsu Prize in 1991.
"The collection of loved songs I" was arranged mainly by masterpieces which have kept being willingly sung as the songs of the Ministry of Education since Meiji Period. It consists of six pieces expressing four seasons (form spring through spring). Songs popularly known as sing arc rather extremely simple. Therefore arranging songs is almost equal to composing. I regarded each piece as an invention whose nature is different from the others and searched for form and polyphony that only women choir s a cappella can manifest. I believe that to feel with any part of body the plentiful musical ground of Japan where songs have been cultivated and sung for a long time will lead to an active meeting with songs. This work was committed by women choir "Ao'i tori" and premiered by conductor KURIYAMA Fumiaki in the fourth regular concert of the same choir.
