2. Aircraft
As of the end of FY 1999, JCG possessed a total of 73 aircraft including 29 airplanes and 44 helicopters, which it stationed at 14 air stations and 9 Coast Guard Offices nationwide.
III Education and Training System
JCG has established the Coast Guard Academy (Hiroshima Prefecture, Kure City) and the Coast Guard School (Kyoto Prefecture, Maizuru City), which are implementing various training.
1. Education and Training at the Coast Guard Academy
The Coast Guard Academy was established to teach academic knowledge and skills and to foster mental and physical abilities, which are necessary as an officer of JCG. It offers a regular, postgraduate, officer candidate and special training courses.
The regular course is for senior high school graduates and people with equivalent qualifications. To train candidates as JCG officers, it provides mainly the liberal arts in its first and second years, and advanced academic knowledge and skills about maritime safety services and vessel operations beginning in the latter part of the second year by dividing students into three groups, namely, Group 1(Navigation), Group 2 (Engineering) and Group 3 (Communications).
The officer candidate course, which offers academic knowledge and skills about maritime safety services and vessel operations at the level required for a junior officer, is for selected active officials of JCG.
The special training course provides active officials of JCG with specialized academic knowledge and skills, such as diving techniques and linguistic proficiency in Russian, Chinese and Korean. This course aims to adapt JCG to more advanced and specialized maritime safety services.
2. Education and Training at the Coast Guard School
The Coast Guard School was established to teach academic knowledge and skills and to foster mental and physical abilities, which are necessary as an official of JCG. It offers a regular course as well as study and training courses.
The regular course is for senior high school graduates and people with equivalent qualifications. In order to train future middle-ranking officials of JCG, it provides general education adequate for a new coast guard officer as well as specialized education.
The study and training course provides active officials of JCG with specialized education and training to improve their abilities.
