(2) Fires on Vessels

In 1999, there were 110 cases of fires on vessels. A look at fire accidents in terms of different vessel type reveals that accidents on fishing boats remain largely common at 64 cases, accounting for 58% of the total (refer to Diagram 10).

2. Prevention and Removal Measures for Oil Spills

 

(1) Improvement of the System for the Removal of Oil Spills

JCG guides and advises those persons who carry out removal operations, such as causers and staff of the Maritime Disaster Prevention Center. JCG itself also takes such measures to curb the damage to a minimum as carrying out removal operations for the oil spill on occasions when the causers are unable to deal with the situation sufficiently by themselves.
