3. Protection of Japanese Fishing Boats

(1) Sea Areas Surrounding Takeshima Island

As regards Takeshima Island situated in the southwest region of the Sea of Japan, Korea, since 1954, has been illegally occupying the island by constructing facilities there including structures used as lighthouses and stationing guardsmen there permanently. Furthermore, Korea implements permanent surveillance of Takeshima Island's surrounding waters with its military vessels.

In line with conventional government policy that aims to bring about a peaceful solution to the Takeshima Island issue through diplomatic channels, JCG permanently deploys patrol vessels around Takeshima Island and carries out surveillance, and issues guidance to Japanese fishermen on how to avoid being arrested by the Korean authorities from the perspective of ensuring their safety.

(2) Sea Areas Surrounding Hokkaido

By regularly deploying patrol vessels and craft, JCG endeavors to survey and police fishing boats and other vessels along the territorial sea boundaries Russia declares as its own in the eastern waters of Hokkaido where seizure cases are feared to occur.

4. Response to Suspicious Ships

(1) Response to Suspicious Ships

High-speed boats of unknown nationality, either disguised as Japanese boats or engaged in suspicious acts, have been observed in the sea areas surrounding Japan under the cover of night. In collaboration with relevant organizations, JCG polices these areas with patrol vessels, craft and aircraft giving priority to waters in which such boats are highly likely to appear.
