Questionnaire on Promoting and Strengthening the Oceanographic Observation for Climate Change Prediction
In recent years, numerous extreme weather events have occurred and brought about devastating natural disasters in the world. To mitigate and prevent natural disasters, advancement of technique for climate analysis and prediction is urgently required, and especially global surveillance of oceanographic condition is.
Today, the Argo program* is expected to make a great contribution to climate prediction. Needless to say, close international cooperation is indispensable to implementing the global oceanographic observation such as this Argo program.
In this respect, Japan Weather Association (JWA) will hold an International Meeting for promoting and strengthening of the global oceanographic observation in Tokyo in 5th October in collaboration with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Nippon Foundation.
In reference to this International Meeting, JWA would like to invite you to consider the attached questionnaire, related to the present situations of climate prediction study and oceanographic observations in your organization. The information received will be compiled by JWA into a document, which will be submitted to the meeting. Each response to the questionnaire from you is never disclosed.
We would deeply appreciate it if you would send us the completed questionnaire before 10th of August 2000.

* Argo program is part of the integrated global observation strategy. Argo is a global array of 3,000 free-drifting profiling floats that will measure the temperature and salinity of the upper 2,000m of the ocean. This Argo program will collect necessary data to understand and predict phenomena that influence our global climate. Please refer to attached papers for further details (source; Argo Home Page).
