To the best of my knowledge no other symposium provides the same opportunity for researchers and students to present their work to an international forum and it is this aspect which I believe is one of the key elements that make ISME unique and very successful. Long may this aspect of the symposium remain.
In contrast the Forums on the third day actively discussed and probed some of the more urgent concerns facing the industry. Such forums can sometimes be over influenced by the commercial considerations of the attendees and speakers, the consequence being that the debate skirts around the real issues. The choice of speakers, and the that the audience contained many influential people in the industry, however meant that challenges were made to the status quo and the need for changes were voiced. This was particularly evident in the forum on fuel quality.
Finally I would like to pay tribute to the organising committee for not only the excellent programme of papers but for all the other social activities that provided me with the opportunity of meeting many others in the industry. I think it will be difficult to better the very high standard of ISME Tokyo 2000 but that is the exciting challenge.
Very best regards
Prof. Hu Yihuai
I was really pleased to have had the opportunity to participate in ISME TOKYO 2000, a great conference of marine engineering society, in the New Millennium. I, as the sole scholar from main land China, acquired so much during the four days long symposium which was held in Tokyo from 23rd through 27th, October in nice weather.
Participants from over twenty countries presented many highest quality technical papers and discussed the issues covering the fields of safety・reliability, accident diagnosis, vibration・noise, lubrication・lubricant, wear, Nox emission, quality of fuel oil, etc., through general sessions and panel discussions during the meeting. I was delighted to be able to get in touch with the most up-to-date international tread in research of marine engineering through the sessions and discussions that I attended and interested in.
Perhaps I should not write private matter of my own, but I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Yuzhong Song of ClassNK who served as the secretary of the Symposium for helping me to overcome so many troubles encountered in visa application, booking of air ticket and accommodation. Without his efficient handling of these matters, I may have missed the great meeting.
In addition to the acquisitions in technologies, I was satisfied with the development of individual relationship with so many top level scholars including Dr Yukio Ino, the General Manager of Machinery Department, Dr Shiko Ryo, Principal Surveyor of ClassNK, Dr Sadahiro Namie, the General Manager of Ship Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport of Japan, Professor Hashimoto and Nishikawa of Kobe University of Mercantile.
Finally, I would like to give my respects and thanks to the Organiser, the Japan Institute of Marine Engineering, for its careful preparation that made the Conference a great success, and cordial hospitality.
