Studies in 1999

(1) Study on the electronic controlled fuel injection system

In order to the NOx reduction without increase other emissions at light load from the experience of tests by using water emulsion fuel, the fuel injection system of medium-scale medium-speed diesel test engine was changed to the electronic control system, like Fig.2.3-1. As a result, it was verified that the electronic controlled fuel injection system was effective for the NOx and PM (Particle Matters) reduction from exhaust gas with better condition of fuel consumption at light load, as shown in Fig.2.3-2. And then the tests by using of water emulsion fuel are keeping on.

(2) Study on the VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) from diesel engines for marine use

From the tests of a small high sped diesel engine, a medium-scale medium-speed diesel engine, and the main engine & auxiliary generator engine equipped in the training ship "Ginga Maru" belonging to the Institute for Sea Training, it was proved that the lower grade fuel oil breaks out the less product mass of methane, one component of VOC and one of influential gases to greenhouse effect, and then, it is regarded as kinds of ethylene arose.

(3) Study on PM analyzer by a fast FID system

It was proved that the correlation data of PM mass measurements with the fast FID measuring system and the filter paper measuring system which include analysis into inorganic carbon and SOF (Soluble Organic Fractions), are intensified by restricting within narrow limits of fuels and conditions from the tests by using of a small high speed diesel engine and a medium-scaled medium speed diesel engine.
