B. CIMAC RECOMMENDATIONS No 13.
After a few years and several meetings, the working group through active work of its various sub-groups, completed a document entitled "Guidelines for the Lubrication of Medium-Speed Diesel Engines" which was published as CIMAC "Recommendation N° 13" (Ref. 1). See Fig. 2.
This booklet gives the synthesis of lubrication of medium speed four stroke engines. Its covers :
a) the engine requirement
b) the lubricant performance
c) the treatment circuit
d) the used oil analysis
e) a trouble shooting list
Frg. 2 - Guidelines for the lubrication of medium speed diesel engines
This document was very well accepted by the industry, judging from the thousands of copies sold and distributed throughout the world.
C. CIMAC RECOMMENDATION No 15.
Having completed the above task, a new Chairman (M. J.F. Chapuy) and a new Secretary (M. K.C. Lim) were elected to serve the group in taking on new tasks/challenges. This group worked in a similar way as previously through sub-groups, each in charge of sub elements of the overall bigger task. The experience gained in CIMAC Recommendation No. 13 helped in the speedy completion of a second document -Recommendation N°15, "Guidelines for the Lubrication of Two-Stroke Crosshead Diesel Engines" (Ref. 2, published in 1997). This book deals with the lubrication of 2-stroke slow-speed engine. See Fig. 3. In this document the following points are covered:
a) cylinder lubrication,
b) system lubrication,
c) lubricant compatibility,
d) handling of stuffing box drain oil,
e) analysis of oil in service and quality limit,
f) troubleshooting guide.

This document too received excellent support from the industry; thousands of the documents were sold and distributed worldwide. Owners, engineers, technicians, students are typical readers.
D. LATEST SERIES OF BULLETINS FROM WG- "LUBRICANTS"
Following the completion of CIMAC 15, the group met to review the new tasks ahead and it became evident that the original target of step 3 (Guidelines for the Lubrication of High-Speed 4-Stroke Engines on HFO) was quite similar and close to the lubrication of medium-speed engines already completed. Consequently the group decided to explore other new objectives. A careful study/review of the worldwide marine industry, recent problems and evolution in the diesel industry led the group to consider all technical points of interest. From this review, the group decided to focus on the following 5 subjects, see Fig. 4:
1) Lube oil consumption of medium speed engines.
2) Interaction of heavy fuel and lubricant.
3) Lubrication of large high speed engines.
4) The process of oil degradation.
5) Lubrication of gas engines.
