3. NOCTHED AND ANGULAR DISTORTED WIDE CROSS JOINT TENSILE TEST

3.1 Purpose

The notched and angular distorted wide cross joint tensile test was carried out to confirm whether unstable fracture under low stress would occur under the actual design condition or not. Furthermore, following characteristics on brittle fracture could be confirmed.

1) Dependence on temperature

2) Relation to thickness

3) Difference between PWHT carried out and not

3.2 Test Procedure

(1) Material

High strength quenched and tempered rolled steel plates having tensile strength over 700N/mm2 which is satisfied with requirement of NK rule, KD63-M-PV were used as test specimens. Mechanical properties are shown in Table 1 and Chemical compositions are shown in Table 2.

(2) Test specimen

Shape of test specimen is shown in Fig, 1. The elliptical surface notch simplifies as a maximum defect, which is supposed to be remained in actual welded parts after even non-destructive inspection. Size of elliptical notch is that depth is 0.2 times plate thickness and length is 1.2 times plate thickness. Notch tip is located in a distance of 1 mm from fusion line of test joint to base metal side in order to be located in the lowest absorbed energy on impact test. And notch end is same position to edge of bead with residual stress. Amount of angular distortion is 15mm/1000mm as standard. Shape of surface notch is shown in Fig. 2.
