5.CONCLUSION

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reuse of waste materials and develop a new fuel oil for marine diesel engines. In addition to the performance of the engine, economic, environmental aspects were considered. From the basic and applicable viewpoints, the conclusions on the applicability of the WPD mixed-C heavy fuel oil drawn from this study are as follows:

1. Reducing the density of low grade marine heavy fuel oil from 177 cSt to 10〜20 cSt @50 ℃ and operating high speed diesel engines directly on it without heating is feasible simply by mixing the oil with WPD at the ratio of 10〜30 vol.%.

2. Ignition lag and exhaust gas temperature slightly increases as the WPD mixing ratio increase but stable performance of the engine is attained without trouble.

3. Although NOx emission slightly increases, the decrease in particulate matters, particularly SOF and dry soot is noticeble along with the increase in the WPD mixing ratio.

4. The experimental result shows that sulfide matters and SO2 concentration decrease as the WPD mixing ratio increases.
