Main improvement point of this time did a divide by class of task that we built already (78 items of preparations works support before the departure from a harbor) with built-in the helping function by real-time.
Then two next functions were appended.
1] explanation function:
It is the function that the configuration of the character and the individual illustration display explanation of the operating procedure that the human enforces drawing on the display top for answers to the reason and reached the conclusion.
2] repeat function:
This function when we failed to hear a sound from CE-SYS, please "say once more" or say "what?" and it is a task return to the previous status.
3.2 The Prospect and Utility of CE-SYS
When these functions works effectively. CE-SYS will become the tool, which it is easy to help for a human in the near future. So far, the design policy of traditional marine engine automation depended on safety of machinery. There were a few measures to prevent the human error as total system technology, and they were states entrusted to practice or experiment and ability of the crew's individual. Besides, the upbringing of the excellent engine member get becomes hard by the change of the school education system recently. Therefore, it is serious demanded that the new system designs of the useful man-machine system and realize cooperation. In our CE-SYS researches, using skilled chief engineer's know-how as the knowledge bases using oral-communication technology. Therefore, CE-SYS is useful in O.J.T. (on the job training) by a lesson of practice in the scene of action such as the engine part crew or trainee with the low experiment. However, by the system that we developed until now, CE-SYS does not completely become a human partner yet. Many problems of human interaction system that it will solve most with this purpose are going to expect in result of research about recent AI technology.
4. THE USER-FRIENDLY FUNCTIONS
4-1 The Human Interaction System
It is the most important to attempt cooperation of a man and machine, making the pattern of action of the crew whom firstly gets any kind of information and consider about what and behaves whatever. After that, we have to construct the expert system that aimed at intellectual support to work in real time for crew needs. The conception diagram about the case to operate the engine of training ship "Yuge-maru" (a diesel main engine) showed by figure 2. (The Human Function of CE-SYS.) When the crew with little experience operates the engine in the traditional operating way, agreement is demanded about the individual procedure, and oral conversation is formed between the expert chief engineers. However the CE-SYS, which we proposed, expects that cooperation relation will create between human by sound input and output in order to utilize knowledge of the expert chief engineer.
4-2 Function of System required
The basic functions that cooperation machine and system need as follows. (Figure-3. the four demanded basic functions be illustrated,)
(1) Service function to a person.
It is important that this service function is realized on human relief and friendliness.
For example, because mental, physiological, physical activities are indispensable, a service function in everything becomes necessary to help for human social activity.
(2) Sound interaction function:
It is a basis to understand what a human wants a machine to do by sound interface and/or adversely it is important that informs a human of movement of a machine.
