4.5 Exhaust Gas Emissions

In connection with emission parameters, it should be mentioned that the introduction of the slide-type fuel valves has had a very beneficial influence on CO, HC and particulate emissions.

The positive effect of the slide-type fuel valves, see Ref. [4], on all these parameters has been proven on several types of engines. Considering that the fuel valve nozzle is optimised with respect to heat distribution and SFOC, the NOx values of the K98MC engine are very satisfactory, see Fig.17. The engine was certified for IMO compliance from its baptism and brings the world' s most powerful two-stroke diesel engine into the line of "green", environmentally friendly prime movers.

5. CONCLUSION

The two new large bore engines, K98 and S90, have been adapted to meet the prevailing requirements for compactness, simplicity, ease of installation and reliability. The testbed testing and initial service results show that these requirements have been met. They follow the lines of the smaller MC-C engines. and the MAN B&W engine programme is ready to meet the power needs of the future in nearly any sector of the shipping industry.
