ISO/TC8 Newsletter

A copy of the 4th issue of the ISO/TC8 Newsletter was distributed to all delegates and will be sent by mail to several other parties. It was reported that over 700 copies of the 3rd issue had been distributed to the members of TC8 and in the IMO meetings. Members are encouraged to take many copies of this as far as possible and distribute it widely such as at business occasions and so on, because it includes the outline of TC8 activities.

Members are again requested to provide articles for the Newsletters and particularly the Subcommittee Chairpersons are requested to provide one or two paragraphs of interest on their work.

ISO/TC8 Brochure

A copy of the updated and revised ISO/TC8 Brochure is provided to all delegates. The brochure updates to reflect the new Secretariat and revises the sample list of standards to reflect the most current activity.

Regarding publications, the Chairman introduced that he was interviewed by the Journal of Commerce of USA, which is a shipping publication, and the Journal of Commerce is now commencing a series of articles of ISO/TC8 in three parts for Shipping Industry.

The Chairman expects to publish positive articles to assist the international maritime community in world wide trade recognizing that the WTO expects to only ISO, IEC and ITU as international standards for world trade.

The Chairman suggested that it is encouraged to translate into each member country's languages to increase distribution of the brochure.

・ 8 N 1000 Status Report

Mr. Hime reported the outline of the database that is necessary to develop the official report of TC8, 8N1000, in a correct and timely manner and proposed that the concept of the database would be that each Subcommittee's secretaries actually go on making changes and everyone continue reviewing at the time.

Mr. J. van Elk provided us a quite completed database using the Microsoft Access database and it was used at the past meeting and this contains the majority of information needed to maintain the 8N1000.

Also for the other type of information that we need is the Central Secretary Report and we need to add the information of the participation table of TC8/SCs, and WGs members to the database.

In this respect, Mr. Hime expected to talk with all the members and expects the comments from members of TC8. He suggested that the important thing is to get the existing database started first, because there are a number of corrections needed to be made in 8N 1000, before TC8 would have a certain level, which means the possible use of advanced ORACLE software.

Mr. Hime also suggested that next work to be able to do is to put Microsoft Access Database on a web site and it would hopefully be able to be viewable by everybody, but may not be able to be changed by anybody. As a result of doing this, TC8 and SCs Secretaries would be able to generate their own reports from this.
