The Secretary-General appointed me as Director, Marine Environment Division, with effect from 1 August 2000 and I took up my new assignment today as the successor to Mr. Oleg Khalimonov.
I am grateful to the Secretary-General for providing me with this new duty and also grateful to Mr. Khalimonov for his guidance and for the support given to me while I was working as his deputy.
The Organization is now facing an additional and significant challenge in the wake of the "Erika" accident and, whilst feeling an immense sense of responsibility in taking over the post of Director at this very important time, I am determined to devote all my best efforts to the work of MEPC and to the objectives of the Organization.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the support and co-operation you have kindly provided to me over the years. particularly while I was working as the Senior Deputy Director, and to request your further support and co-operation for the environment-related work of the Organization which lies ahead of us.
