The document on Ergonomic Criteria is prepared by a IMO Correspondence Group, chaired by Mr Callsen-Bracker, Germany. The document is based on a number of reported ergonomic studies.

A large number of comments were raised to this comprehensive and detailed document, submitted to 45th meeting of IMO/NAV, July 1999, circulated as doc NAV 45/6.

The Correspondence Group document defines in clause 4 the typical workstations on the ships bridge.

Clause 5 Ergonomic Requirements includes detailed technical specifications for issues as

- bridge layout

- field of vision

- windows

- arrangement

- work environment

- work station layout

- alarms

These issues are also subject for technical specifications in ISO 8468 and ISO/CD 14612.

The Technical Working Group concluded - with a number of modifications to doc NAV 45/6 - a final text to this document, which was given the title "Guidelines on Ergonomic Criteria for Bridge Equipment and Layout".

The conclusion in the Technical Working Group of the guidelines for ergonomic criteria is associated with a continued recognition of the ISO-standards on ships bridge layout, ISO 8468 and ISO/CD 14612. This recognition is reflected and detailed in clause 2.20 in the report from the TWG to the NAV-committee and further in Appendix 3 of the IMO-document on Ergonomic criteria.

Conclusions

The IMO-NAV committee approved the report from its Technical Working Group, and decided consequently on a series of actions, some of which has implication for ISO/TC8/SC5 and its work programme.

- the detailed IMO document on Ergonomic criteria is passed further to IMO/MSC for approval as a IMO Guideline, circulated as annex to a MSC circular

- the work on this issue is completed in IMO-NAV, and deleted in its work programme.
